How painful is ingrown toenail removal and recovery?

Hi, I think I'm to need my toenail removed. How much does it hurt at the time? How much does it hurt later on the same day? How long is recovery in general? Will I need time off work?

I had operations on both of my feet due to an ingrown toenail on one foot. I'm not sure if things have changed since then but recommended treatment at that time was to do both feet to avoid any potential problems with the other foot in future. The procedure didn't involve removal of the whole toenail, just both sides- leaving a section in the middle. A laser was then used on the skin on each side to prevent regrowth of the nail at full width.

The procedure and recovery as I recall was pretty much pain free. I think it was a week or two of loose breathable shoes and back to normal. The ingrown toenail itself was much more painful. I was straight back to school, no time off needed.

To add to the above, each toe was injected to numb the toe for the procedure, so a little bit of a sting sensation when the injection is done and that was all.

Haven’t had the whole nail removed but along time be side. Relief from the pain was incredible and swift recovery. But walking without pain was priceless and immediate. I’d imagine with a whole nail you might want some type of sandle or similar during the healing process. With the toenail at its worst and infected toe, I found my Birkenstocks useful as could get foot in and out and no pressure on toe

I've had two, both big toenail. Both were far less painful after just one day, than they had been for weeks beforehand.

I didn't need to take any time off, but I did need to wear a sandal until I could ditch the bandaging.

I've recently had my toe nail removed. The procedure doesn't hurt at all. It takes seconds, its longer to prepare it and bandage it up after.

After its tender but not too bad at all. Not much worse than my pincer toe nail. I had mine removed about 6/7 weeks ago and I've just stopped using dressings at the weekend and its dried out and healing well.

Don't regret having it done at all.

Thpain post op is nothing compared to the pain of an infected ingrown toenail, I was so relieved to get them sorted (had them on both big toes throughout my first pregnancy!) The needles for the local anaesthetic hurt the most but it was well worth it. Took a while to heal fully but they never returned (this was 20 years ago!) Smile

Thank you. That's reassuring. 6-7 weeks of dressing sounds like a long time.
