WHY DO I GET SICK? (don't read if you're eating)

Anyone got any ideas why I get up every morning and throw up? I thought it was maybe too much alcohol but have given it a rest and it makes no difference. Come to think of it, can't remember a time, apart from being much younger, when I haven't. Am healthy, no liver problems (I'm not an alkie, just drink a lot, have been checked by doc for bloods etc. Some mornings it takes until the school run and I'm heaving in the car! Some mornings I'm retching until my eyes stream and my tummy hurts. My youngest son sometimes has this too,has it for a day or two then not for ages. I think it's stress with me, but he's 8 FGS! Any ideas gratefully received, or fellow sufferers?

Do you feel nauseated when you wake?

How is your weight? How is your blood sugar? Do you eat before bed? I've had nausea, and vomiting, from not eating for a long time ...

Do you poo regularly? I find that if I don't everyday then I get physically sick. Weird as it sounds - took me years to work out.

I would try having something with a bit of protein in it just before bed. Cheese?

Alternatively, try to have something simple right when you wake up.

Oh, have you eaten when you get ill? What do you eat for breakfast?

stickyj · 16/10/2007 07:41

get sick as soon as waking really, sometimes wake up and heave. Have tried ant acid tabs, plain biscuits etc. Once I've heaved I'm OK, but sometimes it goes on a bit.

Could be a problem with your brain and timezone orientation. Possible migraine activity going on there - as sometimes people get sick with no classic headache.

Also, I have heard of stomach migraines, which I guess may be influenced by certain hormones if it's always the same time.

It is odd that there is still food to throw up in your stomach, which could indicate gastroparesis (usually seen in diabetics but not exclusively). This is where food just stays in the stomach for ages instead of being pushed through in to the intestines.

Have you tried peppermint tea/ hot water with lemon and plenty of fresh/crystallised ginger? They are both know to be antinausea.

Whatever it is, you shouldn't have to put up with it, so keep going back to docs and asking. x

Come to think of it, it is likely low blood sugar that causes it, as this is what causes it during pregnancy. Try cutting out alcohol and caffiene, at least several hours before bed. These cause too much insulin which lower BG. Try eating a low GI snack before bed such as oatcakes and nut butter, or an apple and a warm drink.

Then, on your bedside table, have a banana or some dry crackers to eat before you even get out of bed. If this means setting the alarm 5 minutes earlier, try it!

Also are you on the pill or HRT? That can cause morning sickness in some people.

Re -your son, it may be a similar problem, so try giving him a snack at bedtime, and getting him to eata cracker first thing.

Have you had your blood pressure checked (early in the morning before any tea or coffee). I have very low blood pressure and have the same problem. It has gotten better as I have gotten older, but generally I need to get up very slowly in the morning (sit up on edge of bed for 5 minutes or so before standing up). If I have not slept enough the nausea is worse. I find that a good solid starchy breakfast (not too much) helps. I generally have a few pieces of buttered toast and not too much tea.
I also have the same problem if I lie down without my head being slightly elevated (ie below my heart), or bend over to pick something up and stand up too quickly.
