I'm constantly thirsty

And it's annoying me! I drink a lot of water and I still feel like my thirst isn't quenched enough.

I did have gestational diabetes during pregnancy and had a blood test earlier this year to check again for diabetes which came back clear.

I'm not sure if it could be medication I'm taking - I'm currently on anti depressants and also taking the contraceptive pill. The thirst seems to have gotten worse since then.

Could this just be side effects of what I'm taking? Confused

Diabetes was the first thing I thought of when you said thirsty. I think it would be worth getting tested again right away and you can ask the GP about your other meds if it is not diabetes.

Diabetes springs to mind too.

Are you overweight? (More propensity for T2 diabetes)

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 02/11/2020 21:30

If it's not diabetes (which would be a natural first guess), could it possibly be your antidepressants? I'm on Sertraline and it makes me have drenching night sweats and I can become quite clammy during the day too. So more water loss = more thirst. Do you experience similar?

gchali · 02/11/2020 21:39

Thanks, I think I'm going to ring the GP because I am drinking loads and this feeling of being thirsty rarely goes away!

Was going to say diabetes too.
I remember my 'best friend' at secondary school just before her diabetes diagnosis.. thirsty ALL day! Carried round a big bottle refilled it constantly. Had to stop at mine on the way home from school because the 20 min walk between the school water fountain and her house was too long for her to go without refilling. Very scary.

I have the exact thing. With foot infections every month. Diabetes tests (blood) all normal. Doctors are stumped but still having them every two weeks.

Fittata · 02/11/2020 21:52

Have you tried testing your own blood sugar? Kits are pretty cheap on amazon and you can find target levels on diabetes UK website.

Amber0685 · 02/11/2020 21:56

It could well be a side effect of your medication. If it is a dry mouth rather than thirst you have, you can buy mouthwashes for that. Biotene.

Torvean32 · 02/11/2020 21:57

Diabetes is one of the most common reason. Are there any medications you are on that can cause this?

Roominmyhouse · 02/11/2020 21:59

I had this a few years back and thought I might be diabetic, I wasn’t but the GP tested me it picked up I had an underactive thyroid and b12 deficiency so worth speaking to the doctor.

Plussizejumpsuit · 02/11/2020 21:59

Which antidepressant are you on? I'd think diabetes too but I'm in citalopram and I get a dry mouth if I don't drink loads.

WitchitaMickey · 02/11/2020 22:02

I have an overactive thyroid and I am thirsty all the time too.

gchali · 02/11/2020 22:14

I'm on Fluoxetine

Is your pill a diuretic?

Ginfordinner · 02/11/2020 22:54

DD is on Fluoxetine and drinks a lot of water. I think you should still rule out diabetes. Having GD does increase the risk of you having it later in life.
