Any ideas please on how to get medicine down a very reluctant DS (aged 17 months?)
It's a complete nightmare.

He's ill this evening with earache and I'm sure he'd feel beter with some paracetamol, but I can't get it down him......

TIA

inject between teeth and gums to the back .. and hold him

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 15/10/2007 21:08

you could mix it with his milk or a drink or even into a yoghurt (all tips i was given by the hospital after my relucant ds wouldnt take his antibiotics)

I'm just a crap mother. I hate the whole holding him down scenario especially when he's ill.

He has this innate ability to make me think it's gone then when I sit him up out it comes again....

Is it just boys?

My DDs never did this (or maybe they did and I can't remember. I've got loadsa kids )

agree with twig. You can also buy in tablet form (did this for DD2) they are calpol tablets. Local pharmacy sold them to me they are in 5ml doses despite them being for 6+. The 6+ is because the recommended dosage is 2 tablets whereas pharmacist told me to use just one.

Let him do it.......

gigglewitch · 15/10/2007 21:16

we use the syringe thingy that you get from pharmacy with medicine, have you got one? we just press in 1ml at a time so he can swallow it (between squawks if necessary); and do it into the side of the mouth as far back as you can, so they can't spit it out! we have daddy holding DC and mummy with medicine. they don't bother fighting {wise ones will suss out they'll lose} and we talk to explain that we want to make them better.

by holding i don't mean 'restraining' i mean cuddling!! daddy is a big chap tho and he cuddles quite overwhelmingly

If you have to go to the doctors, ask about paracetemol suppositories. They aren't generally prescribed (I only found out about them from my SIL who's a nurse) and not all chemists stock them, but they were effective and easy to administer. (Oh the joys of motherhood!)
