Hi guys I'm due to have colonoscopy tomorrow at 2 pm I stopped eating foods 1 pm today but I read online you can have clear liquids and also boiled sweets or white coloured jelly sweets so I had around 5 pm three sweets two pear drops and one white jelly baby
And now I think I misread this and you can only have that before 1 pm
Have i ruined it ?!? Not sure what to do !

Thank you for asking
It's so kind!
I feel ok
They found 7 polyps
He said it is not cancerous he is sure but has sent them off to look at them closer (all except one which he lost after taking it off ) but he said it's more that if I had left them it could have turned cancerous on 7 or so years

Has anyone experienced this?
Have people made lifestyle changes etc to avoid this eg veggie diet or vegan or something? I just don't want this to turn it to anything sinister

Glad it went well OP.
It's good that they will analyse the polyps.

How did you end up having a colonoscopy? I mean did you have symptoms that led to your referral?
Will they keep an eye on those symptoms or are you now discharged?

DH has had bowel cancer, if they say the polyps could have turned cancerous perhaps make sure you're familiar with common signs of bowel cancer to keep in mind for the future. Could the polyps also never have done anything? I don't know, I'm no expert. Your age and family history will also influence the plan for you.
Not trying to scare you, most people have a colonoscopy and go on their merry way, but it is good to be informed of the risks and keep them in proportion.

My consultant said it's a shame the UK isn't like the US where colonoscopies are regularly done, and that it is the best prevention against bowel cancer as you know now they have been removed.

It's so true
My consultants said they would have turned into cancer jn about 7-10 years
I'm 36 which he said is young
I had 2 removed at 26
I have no genetic history of bowel cancer
My parents have never had any cancer and my older siblings in their 40s haven't either altho he said it's most likely a genetic disposition to have it so young I can't believe it because no one else in my family has it

@user1494360838 can I ask what symptoms led to you getting a colonoscopy? I have had some IBS symptoms which I have been putting down to stress but worried.

Glad it has been easily sorted for you but it sounds stressful that it has happened before. Hopefully they will keep an eye on you.

Hi Op. Glad the procedure went well. I had a colonoscopy last week and a polyp removed. We have a family history of bowel cancer although no proven genetic link. Polyps are very common particularly in the over 50s and most are harmless. However as your consultant told you, they can turn. I am now having screening colonoscopies every 3 years. Are they now going to screen you regularly?

@goteam well my symptoms were ibs related but he said they would not have been causing the symptoms. I also had pain in my rectum which he put down to something different potentially a partial prolapse
I think polyps like I had would not (yet) have symptoms
I do really believe that you need to shout and stand up for yourself and if you are concerned you need to say something to your gp and ask for a colonoscopy. I am sure that if it's ibs symptoms you're fine but personally I would get the ball rolling and on a waiting list if you are concerned.

I'm booked in for a ct colonoscopy soon. Iv got a family history of bowel cancer so I'm really scared they'll find polyps.

I'm very bloated have digestive pain I feel like Iv got an obstruction as Iv had trouble since June this year but Iv also got family history of endometriosis too so it's hard as I'm currently under both bowel & gynae.

Daunting Confused

@Itonlytakesone hopefully the investigations will lead to a diagnosis and relief from your symptoms.

Have you had a colonoscopy before (due to family history of bowel cancer)?

When will you see the gynae team?

Itonlytakesone · 06/11/2020 17:37

Iv had a flexible sigmoidoscopy but not a colonoscopy yet. Iv never had symptoms and I'm 37 hope I'm ok because Iv felt so unwell since June

Not sure when I'm seeing gynae yet Iv only had my initial telephone appointment with them so far & that was in September.

@Itonlytakesone I do hope they figure out what is wrong with you, and that it is something easily treatable.

I asked about previous colonoscopies as DH also has a family history and has had bowel cancer (a few years older than you at the time).
So hoping that this is nothing serious but it is worth discussing what the ongoing screening plan is for you for the future (and any siblings if you have them).
Remember it's highly highly unlikely to be cancer, just don't let people tell you it's not possible at your age as anything like that the sooner it is detected the better and for that screening and understanding your risk are important.

@HitthefloorforTaintedLove

I'll definitely be asking about future screening. Oh I'm sorry to hear about your husband hope he was al sorted and is on the mend?

I'm very worried it's the waiting and not knowing and with the current new lockdown adding to the worry.

Iv found it hard to be taken seriously it's been a bit of a battle since June but I'm finally getting looked at now. With it maybe being gynae related it makes it harder but I'm sure I'll get my tests soon. I'm eating a liquid diet it's been a week now to ease my symptoms so I'm not sure how long I'll have to do this for Confused

What symptoms did your husband have to lead him to get a colonoscopy done?

Report
HitthefloorforTaintedLove · 09/11/2020 01:00

@Itonlytakesone my DH was already receiving regular screening colonoscopies due to family history, but his main symptom was extreme tiredness /no energy and when they did the colonoscopy the tumour was evident. He is doing well now but being monitored, hopefully it will stay away.
So I do bang on about it a bit sometimes because screening and early detection are so important, and people's experience of screening varies around the country but Bowel Cancer UK were campaigning for improvements.

Whatever is going on with you, whether gynae or something else I'm sorry that you're having a hard time being taken seriously and hope that you have answers soon.

Is the liquid diet helping?

@HitthefloorforTaintedLove

Iv had a flexible sigmoidoscopy last year all was ok and recently had a stool sample tested for bowel cancer that was ok but I do get very tired it's hopefully not too long for me to wait for my colonoscopy I wait for post every day praying for my letter to come through.

Yes my liquid diet has been the only thing that has helped ease my symptoms. I'm on day 9 now it's tough just eating smoothies & soup but it's worth it for me to feel a bit better.

I'm glad your husband is getting well looked after Smile

Iv just had a letter with an appointment on for bloods at hospital.

I'm awaiting dates for 2 investigation procedures. Does anyone know if this is an indicator that the procedures are closely followed by the bloods?
