Hand, Foot & Mouth ....know the symptoms

My poor dd has this and although it's not serious, it's really painful (mouthful of ulcers). I just wanted to remind mumsnetters of the symptoms so that they know when their children have it (not that there's too much you can do, but soothe them). It seems to be often misdiagnosed as either chicken pox or thrush by gp's.
It generally starts with a little fever and malaise. Then there are spots on the hands and feet and sometimes the bottom, and spots in the mouth that turn into ulcers. You can have the mouth ones without the hands and feet, or vice versa. The spots look just like chicken pox spots, but aren't generally on the torso which is where chicken pox usually starts. There is no "cure," but I've found a little nurofen and ice cream for meals (soothes the ulcers) helps. It's contagious in the begninning, but I think like most things, by the time you realize your child has it, they've infected everyone around. Adults can get it too, but not as common. My poor dd screeched with the first bite of her dinner tonight. Luckily I knew that 3 other children at the childminder's had hand foot and mouth, so realized that it was the food hurting her ulcers (found lots of them in her mouth that weren't there this morning), and not her being difficult. Anyway, hope this helps someone....

Sending you lots of love and reminding you to look after yourself when giving lots to a poorly child. Found this particular illness hard work when my twins had it but fortunately didn't last long.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My three have this atm too, not fun. DD1 also has a secondary infection in her throat, so she is not a happy bunny. I have got up this morning and I have a very sore throat now

SofiaAmes · 21/10/2004 09:42

It's terrible isn't it. I was up half the night with dd crying non-stop and then poor dh did the other half of the night and still had to rush off to college this morning. I've got a sore throat too. I'm just hoping that ds doesn't get it too. He didn't get it last time it did the rounds of the childminders, so maybe he's immune or just has no real symptoms. It must be awful having more than one with it.

Also, if you get this and are pg, do not panic.

I caught it off dd1 when 8 wks pg with ds, and he was (and is) fine. Do not look up scary stuff on the internet -- it's all theoretical, and am informed by consultant virologist there are no documented real problems with hand, foot and mouth in pgnancy.

My two children had this and were feeling off for about two weeks from start to finish. I just looked up the link and it doesn't mention that faeces is infected with the virus for up to 4 weeks.
A preg girlfriend of mine wanted to visit and I was straight with her about H, F & M and told her that my DH, Nanny and I hadn't caught it so it was up to her. She was desperate for a cuddle! As long as any dribble on your hands/face is washed off immediately and you wash your hands after every nappy change, I think you stand a good chance of not catching it. That info is obviously too late for those parents who already have it but might help others.
Hope you all feel better soon.
