Oh Help - Just squished DD's finger in the door! URGENT

I've just shut DD's finger in the hinge of the door.

It looked pretty squished in the immdiate aftermath, and is now a bit swollen.

She can bend it as normal. Does this mean it's not broken? She seems reasonably chipper about it now.

Should I take her to A&E?

(She's 2.8, if that's of any relevance)

Ice it -

HuwEdwards · 15/10/2007 15:10

oh poor you and dd!

cold compress. I think if she can bend it, it's likely not to be broken.

Whizzz · 15/10/2007 15:11

Keep it cool to reduce swelling - I'd only go to A&E if it was badly bleeding or she couldn't move it

fruitymum · 15/10/2007 15:12

bag of peas wrapped in towel - 1 min on 1 min off, is it bleeding lots - these usually are very painful but don't require intervention other than this and of course a big cuddle.

SpawnChorus · 15/10/2007 15:16

Thank you so much!!

There's no blood. I've put arnica cream on it, and I've got her to hold an ice lolly (which is now partially eaten ).

God I feel awful . I keep replaying the sequence of events:

closing the door - meeting rubbery resistance - ear piercing shriek - sickening realisation.

Oh you poor things. I did the same to ds2 when he was about that age. He was fine apart from bruising and soreness.

(My ds1 managed to jam his finger in door spectaularly hard when he was older and he did in fact fracture the tip. We went to A&E, but as I remember there was no treatment -- just painkillers.)

Coolmama · 15/10/2007 15:19

sounds like DD will be fine
You, on the other hand, sound like you need a stiff drink!

Luella · 15/10/2007 15:19

SC, exactly the same thing happened to my DD the other day (she's 22 months) and she screamed and I had that horrible sudden realisation. I also panicked and thought about a&e but gave her something to hold and she could hold it and as she stopped crying and it wasn't bleeding I was happy. But oh you feel awful don't you. I was getting her shoes out the garage door and she thought it would be interesting to put her finger in the hinge!! Hope your DD is ok now

FlameBat · 15/10/2007 15:21

Done that more than once (or should that be ?)

They bounce back much quicker than we do with the guilt!

oggsfrog · 15/10/2007 15:24

I did exactly the same thing when dd was about that age. I rang the doctor to ask for advice and because the skin was broken he said to bring her in. He checked it over and gave us some cream.
If she seems okay now then I wouldn't worry too much - their bones are 'green' and are quite bendy and resiliant.

andiem · 15/10/2007 15:26

I'm sure it will be fine if she can move it give her some nurofen for the pain

LIZS · 15/10/2007 16:01

dd did this in the summer holdiays, looked very flat . Put some ice on it and took her to walk in clinic at A and E where by the time she'd had a dose of nurofen and a wait of an hour or more she was moving them well so didn't even xray . Not even bruised or swollen next day .
