Healing anal fissure

OliLondon · 30/10/2020 09:11

Hi,

I've been meaning to drop this message for a long time, with the aim of helping anyone feeling as desperate as I was, with ongoing pain and thinking if surgery or botox was the only answer.

I went to see a private GP thinking I had hemorrhoids - something I suffered from for two decades since my early 20s - and has been applying Anusol for about a month. It turned out it was a fissure, something I didn't know the existence of until then.

This was in February 2019. I applies the GTN ointment prescribed by the GP (can't remember the name) for 5 weeks. Had a very bad headache in the beginning and felt awful. As it wasn't healing, I asked to renew the prescription for another 5 weeks.

It wasn't effective, so I started looking into any alternatives available out there and searched through every single forum for people sharing their experiences: Bepanthen, Hemosan, some wheatgrass pills + cream, hot salt baths, you name it, I tried.

Eventually, I came across an Indian research in which they had successfully treated over 65% of the patients with an olive oil based mixture. Then, I came across some other info on bee wax.

Three steps that you need to take simultaneously:

  • bee wax mixture
(and you need to heal from inside!)
  • change of diet
  • supplements

So here is what I did in July 2019: I prepared my own little mixture of bee wax (quite expensive - get the best and sustainable that you can find) and some drops of olive oil. I applied that 6 times a day and after each passage. Then, I gradually reduced as I healed.
Bee wax is extremely healing on wounds!

If you are reading this post you are most probably concerned and, as you know, after each passage, the fissure opens and bleeds again. It's never ending. So you need to change your diet. This basically means adopting a plant-based diet. No junk. Not even vegan junk (yes, it exists).
Avoid gluten and legumes (at least until you are totally healed). You need to free your intestine.
Search for recipes on google, do a juicing/smoothie day in the week. Eat any fruit and any veggies. It's a lot of reeducation, but this is for your own good. Always start your day with a pint of warm water with half a lemon, wait at least 20mins before eating your breakfast - fruits!

Parallel to that, invest in tinctures/extracts: Dandelion, Milk Thistle, Cat's Claw, Burdock root, Nettle. Take a dropperful of each with some water. You can also drink those as tea.
Add herbs to everything you eat: coriander, parsley...
Get turmeric tablets (good quality with pepper)
Make yourself a gold milk in the evening (google for recipe, but use a plant-based milk, forget dairy = mucus).

Lastly, drink lots of water!

I was in pain every day of my life for 6 months. Some days I wondered if I was going to get through my journey to the office in the tube. Some days I screamed in pain with the spams and cried in desperation. Most often, I couldn't sit down!
There is hope! Good luck! xx

Thank you so much for all your advice. Im still suffering 8 months later after giving birth. Will take onboard all your advice. Do you know where i could get beeswax from. Or have you got a picture of one that you used please. Yes im taking laxido but im worried ive become too dependent on them and cant do a normal poo anymore

OliLondon · 20/01/2023 10:33

Very sorry to hear. It can be extremely painful, leaving one unable to live correctly, especially with a baby!
I got my first beeswax pot from a small producer in France (he was from the region of Isère near the Alps) but I no longer have it. It was the best ever, very thick and grainy so I did mix it with olive oil.
My other two pots, I got them from Amazon. I think the producers were from Greece. The last one was very smooth and already had some olive oil mixed in - it was being advertised as good for stretch marks...
Once you start feeling better, fissure healed or almost, you may wish to consider a few sessions with a good chiropractor - adjusting the spine can do wonders for the digestive system and getting your stools back in order.

Thank you so much. I will look into it. You are right. Its extremely difficult. The dread of using the bathroom. I feel like sometimes im healing but then i feel some discomfort a few weeks after. Its very up and down

mumof2bambinos · 25/01/2023 11:43

@Yorkshirelass04 just wondering if you have healed using the buzzbalm. Im looking at purchasing that as it has beezwax in it

Hi - yes I've healed but the wrong foods and drink send me backwards. I also found out I have a histamine intolerance and cutting lots of high histamine foods has helped.

Buzzbalm makes a load of difference and contains the ingredients used in the academic study.

mumof2bambinos · 28/01/2023 17:02

@Yorkshirelass04 thank you for replying. How long did it take you to heal when using buzzbalm and how long did you have your fissure for. My fissure keeps retearing and bleeding.

I'm not sure! Probably a couple of months. I combined it with other things. But you get instant relief with buzzbalm especially if you put it up there at night.

mumof2bambinos · 29/01/2023 00:34

Ahh perfect i hope this works! Its so hard to try and apply it on the fissure cos its internal

catsandkid · 29/06/2023 09:20

@mumof2bambinos - Did Buzzbalm work for you?

mumof2bambinos · 29/06/2023 10:34

@catsandkid hi i feel like it worked a bit but my sphincter muscle has become so tight because of the fissure that i just keep retearing. It is worth a try though. How long have u had your fissure

catsandkid · 29/06/2023 11:37

I first got it in 2016 after childbirth. It was hellish and took 4-5 months to heal. SInce then it has been mainly pain-free and no problem except for around 3-4 minor re-tears that usually healed up within 2 weeks.

This current re-tear has been ongoing for a week now without a sign of buggerin off yet! Have got GTN to use, but interested in other remedies too!

My muscle is also tight. I have continued to use daily stool softners since original fissure too. When I have a flare up I increase the dose for a few weeks until it calms down. I can't see me getting off the stool softeners ever tbh.

mumof2bambinos · 29/06/2023 16:37

Are your stools normal size like stool type 4 off bristol stool chart or have they gone thin- just asking cos youve been on stool softeners for a long time. I think the size of the stool helps with healing too

catsandkid · 30/06/2023 08:40

Yeah they're thin. Have been since this started which is why I've continued with softeners. I think I likely have a lot of constricting scar tissue too hence not much stretch to the muscle. Usually not a problem at all though. Was advised to keep up softeners long term and no risks provided I'm happy with it.

I am just praying this flare fucks off asap! Started GTN last night but no relief yet. It's so miserable.

mumof2bambinos · 30/06/2023 13:24

I was listening to dr chung on youtube and he was saying bulkier stool is better. But cos of the stool softeners well using em for a long time i cant get em bulkier. Have you tried diltiazem? Its like gtn. Personally i dont think gtn did much for mine. I would say try buzzbalm as the ingredients in there are all healing ingredients. And try putting heat on the area to encourage blood flow. Have u tried good old sudocrem

Emeralds65 · 08/07/2023 09:02

Hi
I wonder if I can have some words of wisdom here.
I have developed a fissure after a rectal digital exam which was done to check on my internal haemorrhoids. I am positive that I didn’t have this fissure before the exam ever.
I am using diatiazem on it and taking plenty of still softeners (2 fybogel, 2 capsules of dulcoese, 30 ml lactose) everyday to keep my stools soft and trying to eat one meal a day with mostly vegetables and fruits.
Yet everytime I open my bowls the first time the still comes out it opens the fissure and it stings and bleeds. The pain is so much better from when it first started 13 days ago but it still hurts.
I am so desperate and wondering how long it takes to heal.
I also use Buzzbalm on my anal hole several times a day and as I said the pain is better from here it was but I still feel a mild burning burning sensation for a few hours after the BM.
please help, I feel like I have no life, I am mentally suffering with it more than physical pain.

catsandkid · 08/07/2023 11:44

I'm still suffering - it's been 16 days for me now.

Have been using GTN for 8 days but not noticed any real difference tbh and it makes me so tired! Taking 3 laxido sachets a day and barely eating - instead, have few glasses of smoothies and a small meal of mainly veg.

Had some days of no real pain during BM but the next day it'll hurt again. Very annoying.

Have got diltiazem prescribed now and will swap to that once it arrives. @mumof2bambinos did you find dilatzem worked better?

I do think these buggers take time to heal up tbh. Having suffered for 4 months straight post birth and then had the occasional re-tear during past 7 years, it can take as long as it takes. My re-tears usually last only a week or so, so I'm worried this relapse is still going strong with no indication of healing.

mumof2bambinos · 08/07/2023 12:28

@catsandkid ive only just started using diltiazem but read its very good to help heal. If stools are thin they shouldnt be causing so much pain. Are they like soft serve ice cream/mushy? If theyr not maybe they need to be like that to let the fissure heal. It will heal. Just can take time.

Emeralds65 · 08/07/2023 13:59

I used GTN before, I think Diltiazem is better as it doesn’t give me headaches and make me want to be in bed all day long. Not sure whether it actually heals or it is the Buzzbalm and time that is healing my fissure.

mumof2bambinos · 08/07/2023 14:30

I found buzzbalm brilliant but my issue is any stool that isnt pencil thin reopens my fissure. It will heal. Just keep doing what your doing. Make sure stool is soft

Emeralds65 · 12/07/2023 16:40

How is everyone doing now? Mine is almost healed but now I have in two weeks time an appointment with a colorectal surgeon which means it will be painful again :( I am dreading going to the appointment.

mumof2bambinos · 12/07/2023 21:50

@Emeralds65 so pleased to hear its healed. Sounds like an acute fissure. U can always tell them not to do an internal exam to avoid risk of then retearing it

Emeralds65 · 12/07/2023 23:32

@mumof2bambinos yes thank you :)

Can I say that to a surgeon who might be the one operating on me? Wouldn’t that mean they can say they won’t operate on me because I am not cooperating. I have an ongoing case of haemorrhoids and I want to get rid of them for good as that is now going on for years and becoming a hindrance every now and then.

mumof2bambinos · 13/07/2023 04:15

@Emeralds65 yes you cab just say to them that you dont want an internal examination as you feel your fissure is just about healing and you dont want to risk a retear. Most are understanding as they wont want it retearing anyway. They know it can take a while for the skin to build up the strength again on the fissure site

catsandkid · 13/07/2023 11:53

My fissure is still active. Not giving me as much pain but still sharp when I go BM and some lingering uncomfortableness during the day. Been on GTN 2 weeks tomorrow.

@mumof2bambinos how are you finding Diliatzem? My prescription for it hasn't arrived yet so I'm still on GTN.

mumof2bambinos · 13/07/2023 12:44

@catsandkid i feel its soothing but ive been on antibiotics for a tooth infection so my stools have been very loose so not really felt a lot of pain. Cant say yet if its working really well. Just want this stupid fissure to piss off
