Hearing heartbeat in ears when lying on side

RaeCJ82 · 28/10/2020 11:21

Does anybody else hear their heartbeat in their ears when they lie on their sides?
Not sure whether this is something I should be concerned about or not, but it's definitely annoying when trying to sleep.

Yes I do, it's blood pressure related isn't it?

RaeCJ82 · 28/10/2020 11:41

I've had my blood pressure taken quite a few times recently and it's been fine so don't think that's the case for me.

That's often a sign of high blood pressure, but might be sinusitis or something. It's not usually persistent for long enough to stop you from going to sleep if it's blood pressure, IME but that E is pretty limited!

Worth asking a real doctor about if it's ongoing and persists.

Tyzz · 28/10/2020 22:59

It's a form of tinnitus. If it persists get it checked out, might just be blocked ears.

Bagelsandbrie · 28/10/2020 23:03

I have this when my iron is low.

skelesheridan · 28/10/2020 23:11

I get this when my ears are blocked with wax

gamerchick · 28/10/2020 23:14

It could be low iron, dehydration or tinnitus. Work on the first 2 and it usually goes though.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 28/10/2020 23:30

I can make it happen and go away....it's related to the ability to close your ears, hear the eardrum rumble, (ear drum rumble has been mentioned before on MN)
...I think if you are a bit tense then everything links up and you hear the pulse in your ears.

PickAChew · 28/10/2020 23:31

Yeah. Turns out it's a form of tinnitus. I've always had it.

JammyDodgersandPeas · 28/10/2020 23:33

I didn't realise until just now that this wasn't something everyone could do! Mine's normally louder when I'm under the weather but it's always there if I concentrate on it.

PickAChew · 28/10/2020 23:34

And I can make my ears rumble voluntarily. Didn't realise that was a ninja skill.

Baboomtsk · 28/10/2020 23:39

It's called pulsatile tinnitus. It has lots of causes. I get it occasionally when feeling very anxious. Consult a doctor as it might be linked to an infection which can cause problems if left untreated.

I agree it could be Pulsatile Tinnitus. My son has it in a very severe form. Depends how much it is affecting you, but have a read up on it.

Spoke to the doc today and he didn't seem too concerned at all about the heartbeat when lying on my ear. Told me to put olive oil in my ear for a week and to arrange an appt with the nurse to see if they need syringing.
I actually had my bloods done on Tuesday because of ongoing dizziness/disequilibrium and all levels are good apart from my vit d, which was a little bit low.

Do you have health anxiety by any chance OP?

cosmo30 · 29/10/2020 16:00

Sure you haven't got an ear infection especially since you've been having dizziness? I get a lot of inner ear infections and always get dizziness and pulsing tinitus with them

apairofpears · 29/10/2020 16:04

I've had it on and off since I was a child. I used to think it sounded like heavy boots walking on snow.

bigdecisionaboutwork · 29/10/2020 16:15

I have it when I lie on my right hand side as my stomach then presses a little on my heart. Had an ecg years ago to check as I was staying awake panicking at night and all was fine. Cure : doctor said to lie on my left!

RaeCJ82 · 29/10/2020 16:36

@FizzyDizzy121 I've never suffered from health anxiety until I started with the dizzy spells, heart palpitations and chest pain in August. I have felt anxious about these symptoms but have had my heart checked and all is good there. I'd just like to get rid of this dizziness and am trying to explore all options.

Arnoldthecat · 04/11/2020 20:31

Best to lie on your back or another position where your ear isnt compressed on the pillow. The more you hear it,the more you will focus on it and the greater your anxiety about it.

RaeCJ82 · 13/11/2020 12:57

So, it turns out that I have an left outer ear infection and my middle ear is infected/full of fluid. Apparently my ear drum looks dull. I've been prescribed Otomize ear spray and Fluticasone Furoate as my sinuses are bunged too. I'm really hoping this is the answer to my dizziness/imbalance.
