High Prolactin levels. Is it always a prolactinoma?

A recent blood test has shown high prolactin levels (2,500+ mU/L). The test was repeated to double check levels. I've been referred for an MRI to check my pituitary gland.

I'm in my 50's. Menopausal with a history of PCOS.

Could it be anything other than a prolactinoma? I have a family history of thyroid problems - could that affect prolactin to these levels? As far as I'm aware the blood test covered thyroid levels too and it was only prolactin mentioned.

Hi, I suffered from years of infertility which was eventually identified as high prolactin levels. I began making breastmilk and my body believed I was actually pregnant! My consultant told me that it was possibly a tumour in my pituitary gland. I had a scan but it was hormone imbalance and nothing more. If you are menopausal then maybe this is hormone related? The MRI was quick and not really a problem.

I've a history of hypothyroidism, PCOS and had horrendous prolactin levels back in 2016. I didn't have any of the symptoms though but Endo put me forward for an MRI scan just to be on the safe side. Luckily no prolactinoma and the levels dropped naturally three months later.

Thank you both.

I'm not too bothered that it could be a prolactinoma (I hope that doesn't sound blasé) - my consultant was straightforward about it and has briefly discussed the medication available - I just want to be fully aware of anything else it could be and can't find any information about thyroid problems and high prolactin.
