Constant headache

I will go to the GP again but I'm worried about what's causing this.

I've had a headache for almost 6 weeks. The last time I went to the GP I was given a large prescription for strong pain killers and sent on my way. Pain killers aren't working. Sleeping isn't working, time off work isn't working, cutting out alcohol isn't working.

What else can the GP do?!

Had your eyes tested?

Lowkee · 27/10/2020 05:25

Have you started on any new meds that have a side effect of headaches?

Aquamarine1029 · 27/10/2020 05:46

How old are you?

Snowbeau · 27/10/2020 13:58

I'm early 30s.
I've been sleeping lots more, 10 hrs per night plus naps at the weekend.
Work has definitely been more stressful, but enjoyable too.

I've not had my eyes tested. I will do that. I also have epilepsy.

Have you had your boiler checked recently? It could be carbon monoxide poisoning.

Sweettea1 · 27/10/2020 17:59

Surprised gp didn't advise you to get eye test eye strain can cause headaches.

igotdemons · 27/10/2020 23:50

I’ve been the same, OP. Had them since mid August. Just told by my GP to take painkillers but I don’t want to do that for long periods. Had my eyes tested, boiler serviced/carbon monoxide alarm detecting nothing. I feel nauseous and dizzy on and off with mine. It’s awful ☹️

grassisjeweled · 28/10/2020 00:50

Changes in diet? Low carb, cutting sugar?

Maze76 · 28/10/2020 00:50

I don’t say this to scare you, there are so many reasons as for why this is happening. But reading your story, it’s similar to what one my friends was experiencing. She had a headache for 6 weeks, which she put down to stress, she was wrong, she was taken to hospital where it was discovered that she had a Brain tumour. Again, not saying this to alarm you, but I would insist on further tests.

GlamGiraffe · 28/10/2020 02:53

Dehdration and electrokyte balace being off. Drink dioralyte.
Cold weather can bring on headaches (ive got an awful one from it).
Neck problem. Consider weringcan osteopath (not chiropractor) who can assess anc remedy if necessary

Snowbeau · 30/10/2020 12:24

I've been to get my eyes tested this morning. The outcome wasn't good news and I've been referred to the hospital with an appointment this afternoon.

I'm very, very scared

What painkillers were you prescribed? I know some types of painkillers can actually CAUSE headaches (I think they are called rebound headaches)

Youngatheart00 · 30/10/2020 12:29

OP, sorry have just seen your latest update. What tests have you been referred for? Are you at the eye hospital or general?

You are now ‘in the system’ and will be looked after. Take care. There is always someone on MN to chat.

Snowbeau · 30/10/2020 14:14

General hospital, not sure yet what the tests will be.

I know it will feel daunting to say the least but take confidence from the fact that you are now on the path to resolving whatever is causing your headaches.

frustrationcentral · 30/10/2020 14:55

Thinking of you this afternoon @Snowbeau x

pyxies · 30/10/2020 14:58

Did the optician find swollen optic discs? I was going to suggest that my Neuro problem started with a headache that wouldn't go.

Is it worse when you lie down?

Snowbeau · 30/10/2020 20:02

@zolagrey yes swollen optic discs
What was your diagnosis?

Snowbeau · 30/10/2020 20:09

Actually not sure if I want to know, I've been avoiding Google.

Thanks for all the hand holding. I appreciate it.

frustrationcentral · 30/10/2020 20:21

@Snowbeau , try not to worry ( I know that's hard though)

Have you got someone with you keeping you company?

Chapellass · 30/10/2020 20:24

OP this is what happened to me - google IIH - it behaves like a tumour but isn't and can be controlled by medication

Chapellass · 30/10/2020 20:26

Idiopathic intercranial hypertension - they will need to do tests to check for worse, it's frightening I know. Hand hold from me
