Clots and Period related - any point going to GP at nearly 50?

Name changed for this and as my temporary name suggests, this is a bit grim, and I am sorry.

Im 50 shortly with no menopause symptoms so far apart from some heavy periods.

For the last 6 months I have a very weird six hours or so on day 2 of my periods, where the blood stops completely , my wee is normal colour, clean pad, dry tampon, etc. this is accompanied by excrutiating pain that I have to breathe through. I can't concentrate or do anything else. - mefanamic acid, hot water bottle etc help a bit, but it is really bad. I have never given birth so I don't know what labour feels like, but I am sure it is not far off this.
After a few hours and drinking lots of liquid , I finally pass a large clot of blood, and goodness me - the relief! - back to normal, low level period pain like I have had since I was 13 - maneagable with ibuprofen and passes on day 3.
It has just happened today and each time I think " I must ask MN if this is a thing" and so I finally ask.

I don't usually go to the GP because I am obse and their answer to everything is " lose 10% of your body weight and you'll be fine".
If this is the answer to this, then ok, but I am wondering if there could be something wrong.
It actually feels like I imagine labour would feel like, waiting to pass a clot that has been stuck somewhere inside me ( obviously not as big as a baby, but the clot today was about the size of a computer mouse in length and width.

I have an even greater appreciation for women who have given birth and I feel more inadequate each month that I only have a few hours pain !
Thanks

Mine are definitely clottier as I have gone through my 40s. I read somewhere, a large clot is about the size of a 50p piece or larger.

I think if the pain means you can't concentrate as normal, you should see your GP. There could be something else behind it, not just obesity or perimenopause, though they may or may not listen.

OP, I am the same age as you, and get the same thing on the second day, blood flow stops completely for about a day, but I don't get the pain. I tend to get quite bad pain on the first day before the flow stops, but not as bad as you I would say. I don't know if this is a thing, I have been wondering that too!

Sorry, I don't have any advice really!

Almost fifty. Clottier is def normal. I occasionally get pain but not often (and it’s def not like labour - it’s painful but only for a couple of seconds and then gone.) Try gp but.... I suspect you will get fobbed off.
Gruesome question about clots. Hard? Soft but large? Tissue or sorta lump of jellied blood? Have you looked up decidual cast?

The pain to pass blood can be caused by something called stenosis of of the cervix when it's very tight (as a result of loss of estrogen).

It's worth seeing your GP and maybe getting a gynae referral.

Literallyfedup · 26/10/2020 20:18

Agree with jinglinghellsbells - it is caused by loss of estrogen. Please contact your GP.

Thanks everyone , really appreciate the replies. - i googled the decidual cast, and as it is just wobbly jelly clots, I am thankful to be able to rule this out.

If you have never given birth and are now in peri your cervix is likely to be shut tight.

This mean the blood cannot escape quickly so it pools in the womb and clots. It also means you get pain like labour when your cervix decides to open!

Look into getting vaginal estrogen from your GP to help make it easier.

I had this in my 40s. Mirena coil solved it overnight.
