Please can anyone who has been through this advise me on how I go about it? Can I get it done on the NHS even though I'm 33 but know i'm done with having children.
Any advice gratefully received

Hi there,
Whats your GP like? Have you been able to discuss it with her/him?

collision · 14/10/2007 19:27

I have bumped up a conversation in CHAT about this for you to read as I am terrible doing links!

It is about feeling petrified at having more children and someone says how they had a laparoscopic sterilisation. Have a read of the thread and see what you think.

If your GP is sure that you are sure it's the right thing to do, then he/she will refer you on the NHS. I have not had one, but I have worked at a clinic which carried them out. I have a copper coil myself, the GP will probably offer this first if they have not already.

Hiya, I got sterilised on the NHS when I was 26 with one child. So yes you can have it done.

At the end of the day you are an intelligent woman who is quite capable of making this decision. Its your body, not your GP's and if they are funny about it then I think thats what you need to say to them. As long as you can assure your GP that you've thought it through carefully and you are aware its not reversible (I know techically it can be and probably is. but reversal can't be guaranteed so you have to say this) then I can't see why they should have a problem.

My GP was fine about it, he just asked if I knew it couldn't be reversed and then put me on the waiting list (about 6 months).

The op itself was fine, I stayed awake and watched my fallopian tubes been clipped on the TV screen in theatre! I was fine by the next day although I have had a previous exploratory laparoscopy and was in a lot of pain for days afterwards. I'm sure the pain was related to the gas that they pump into you been trapped, but I was in agony for over a week - couldn't get out of bed and on a load of meds. I was expecting it to be the same when I got sterilised but it wasn't - I took peppermint capsules that time as someone said it helps with dispersng the gas. Good luck.

thanks everyone.
I haven't asked my gp yet, wanted to have an idea of what it involved first.
Thanks Collision, I will look out that thread.
StripeyKnickersSpottySocks - can I ask how long you were in hospital for?
