babybero is doing really well, but seems to have pretty rapid breathing... should I be worried?

He is 22 days now, gaining weight, feeding very well day and night, wet and dirty nappies galore, is starting to become more alert/look round etc. (He's even trying to hold up his head ). He's had a snuffly nose for a week, but it doesn't always seem to bother him and he was checked over on Mon and pronounced fine.

BUT he does breathe rather quickly - often in the region of 60-80 breaths per minute - slower when sleeping deeply. He can feed and cry, so doesn't seem to be in distress. But I know 40-60 breahs pm is normal for a newborn. Is it just his cold, or should I worry?

i was told that if you are worried about anything until they're one you should be on the phone to the doctors. no job too small, they said. give them a ring, just for your peace of mind, if nothing else. my pal's wee boy breathed too quickly when he was born and he was taken into scbu for checks. i think he was fine, but the docs did want to have a look.

thanks aitch, just looking to see where I can ring/go on a Sunday. I think he is OK but it does niggle a bit somehow.

better to feel a bit of a prat and be told there's nothing wrong, i think, when it's a newborn.
in a way i was glad that my doc had been very unequivocal about that, because i actually think it meant i didn't go to see him. in fact i think dd's only been once, and it was for a bad cold.
but just knowing that they would take my maternal instinct seriously if i needed them to, i think it allowed me to listen to my maternal instinct better. iykwim?

ikwym definitely.

berolina, I agree with Aitch 100% - definitely get yourself some peace of mind

I would think your ds is fine, and the breathing is down to stuffed up nose - my dd breathes much faster when her nose is stuffy, and it was more obvious when she was a newborn (10 months now). But NHS direct are very nice to anxious Mums of small babies, I'd give them a ring (expect long ring back time though!).

Phone docs now - could be a chest infection.
