MRI scan on 6 week baby - do they sedate???

Quick question, my 6 week old is due to have an MRI scan on Wednesday, and it's just occured to me that they might sedate her to get her still enough for the scan. As it's Sunday today I can't ring the neurosurgeon or the hospital to find out, so I thought I'd see if anyone on here might have any idea whether babies are normally sedated, or scanned when they are asleep???

my dd had an MRA scan at 1

general anaesthetic via gas

they did it while she was sitting on my knee, with my hand as a mask

it was a bit traumatic - for me not her, lol - but very gently done

My DS2 had an MRI scan when he was six months old, and they did sedate him. They do have to be really still for it, so I would guess they would still sedate your DD even though she is really young.

As a PP says, it was more traumatic for me than for him - the worst part was not being able to feed him for the few hours before the scan - he recovered really quickly.

Hope it all goes well and nothing serious shows up....

dd had an MRI when she was 6 months, she had a GA. It terrified me. I just shook and cried the entire time. It was awful. She was absolutely fine!

My dd had an MRI age 2 and a bit. She had a GA. I think it took about 45 mins for the scan to be done.

no they will wait til your baby fallls asleep, my 2.5 yr old got bumped for a sleeping tiny baby since he was having a ga. plus they would send you a letter about having a ga for a scan in with your appoint.

they don't always do that. The noise of the MRI is unbelievable and may wake them up.

DD had an MRI at 8 weeks and she was sedated. If they do sedate rather than give a GA whatever you do, make sure they give the sedative as a pessary if at all possible (or injection) DD was given hers orally which she hated and was very traumatic and then threw a load of it up. They couldn't give her any more but she didn't go to sleep properly. As they need to be absolutely still for the scan we had to go back again and have it all done for a second time a week later. If they give a sedative they will also need to insert a canula into the back of her hand - don't be afraid to ask for an experienced doctor to do this as it can be tricky on very small babies.

I hope it goes well for you.
