POSSIBLE TMI ALERT

I know I said think in the title but I'm 99% sure I do and DS (5) does too.
I'm nearly 7 weeks pregnant and I have been completely floored with nausea. The last 3 days though I have all of a sudden had really bad cramps in my tummy and awful diarrhoea.
It happened tonight and then I felt a weird sensation round my bum. When I wiped, I saw a worm moving around. It's made me feel even more physically sick!!!
Please someone tell me this is easily dealt with!!

Yep. Go to chemist, get worm medicine. Bloody things.
You also need to wash all the towels/sheets. Make sure DS is washing hands after toilet and get him to wear pants in bed.

cakeforbreakfast1 · 22/10/2020 20:54

I'm not sure pregnant women can take the worming medicine, 5 year old can but it's just good hygiene for pregnant/breastfeeding women

ladymary86 · 22/10/2020 20:59

@cakeforbreakfast1 oh no! I am absolutely sick just thinking about this. I hope they can give me something!

Not usually recommended to take ovex in pregnancy. Your ds can take it though

I don't think pregnant women can take the medicine. Instead you have to follow a really strict hygiene regime. Wash all bedding, towels etc. Hoover everywhere, wipe down all surfaces. Deep clean of the house basically. Then all wear pants to bed each night and all wash bottoms each morning. Plus regular hand washing throughout the day, and keep nails on everyone really short.

WorksTheDinerAllDay · 22/10/2020 21:07

Sorry, I should have added, you need to do this for 6 weeks due to lifecycle of the worm and the eggs.

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 21:08

Worm meds did not make your lo autistic @howsicklyarsekissy.

Insertfunnyname · 22/10/2020 21:13

It’s important to wear pants to bed at night (that’s when the worms come out and lay eggs on your sheets) and in the morning everyone carefully put pants in the wash without shaking the invisible eggs everywhere and then have a shower and wash bottoms. That way all eggs are caught and killed and it breaks the cycle.

Helloyouthere · 22/10/2020 21:20

They can come out at night to lay eggs around the and area. If you put a load of valentine of your bum each night they won't be able to come out. It will also help with any nighttime itching.

They are really common. My boys have had them a few times Flowers

ladymary86 · 22/10/2020 21:27

@Helloyouthere valentine??

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 21:28

Vaseline probably

IdblowJonSnow · 22/10/2020 21:31

Yuck. They are so itchy.
Is there no alternative to take in pregnancy? Try asking pharmacist OP, they'll know.

janeyloves · 22/10/2020 21:32

I had this when I was pregnant too. I didn't take any medication but I did manage to get rid of them by washing my bum several times a day (fairly easy as we have a bidet) and with scrupulous hand hygiene.
Of course I treated the rest of the family with Ovex (the kids had given them to me I think) and did the usual washing of sheets/towels etc.

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 21:35

No there isn't an alternative medicine. They dont even make the vile pripsen stuff any more that I used to get given as a child

Honeyandapple · 22/10/2020 21:36

Oh how horrible.
How common is it? I have never had this (that I know of). Sounds revolting. Is it possible to have it without realising

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 21:39

Yes you can have them with no symptoms which is why you need to treat the whole family if one person has them. I would use hygiene methods for yourself, ovex for your dc/dh/dp and if you sing get rid of yours in 6 weeks/by the end of the 1st trimester contact your gp to see if they let you take the ovex too

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 21:40

Don't, not sing!

MoonSauce · 22/10/2020 21:44

@howsicklyarsekissy

Please be careful with the worm meds I took it when pregnant after told not to & my son is autistic.
Oh wow. You really think that's caused autism? I'm autistic because it runs in the family, through our genes....... Its nothing to do with the medicine.

But obviously don't use anything the doctor hasn't said is safe OP. Good luck - it's not nice.

WhatILoved · 22/10/2020 21:46

Try eating pumpkin seeds, a natural way to make your body a hostile place for the worms. They feed on sugar, so try and avoid sweet things. Wash bottom a lot and use Vaseline or sudocream at night to suffocate the buggers. Check with doctor if you can take other worming medicine other than ovex.

gamerchick · 22/10/2020 21:55

Please don't spread stuff like that Hmm

The reason you're not supposed to take the meds is because they can't test on pregnant women so it's erring on the side of caution. Not because it's not safe.

It'll take around 6 weeks if you do it naturally as they'll just die out. Be totally fastidious with hygiene. Put vaseline or the like on your bum hole before bed and wear pants. Shower immediately on waking and wash undercrackers on a hot wash. Iron gussets when dry.

Eventually they'll just die as they can't reproduce in the bowel, the eggs have to start the cycle of being swallowed all over again.

Make sure you treat your kid and again in 2 weeks. I used to worm mine every few months when they were little.

QuentinWinters · 22/10/2020 22:32

I took worm meds while PG (consulted GP)
My son is not autistic Hmm

Wobblysausage · 22/10/2020 22:53

I took ovex whilst pregnant and Dd was absolutely fine. Not autistic Hmm. GP told me to take it. The medicine stays in your gut and doesn’t go into your bloodstream so won’t even affect the baby. Women in third world countries regularly take worm medication during pregnancy and there is little evidence to suggest it affects the baby.

Home remedies do not work and just hygiene alone does not work. Don’t put Vaseline on your bum as they will just lay eggs inside you which can then hatch. It’s called retro-infection. Just take the medication, do the hygiene stuff for 6 weeks and they’ll go!

And for the love of God don’t Google about them or you’ll get sucked into a wormhole Grin of false information and scaremongering!

dementedpixie · 22/10/2020 22:56

From the link I posted earlier:

Because there is little information on the safety of mebendazole in pregnancy, where possible, hygiene measures should be tried first to treat threadworms in early pregnancy and mebendazole only used after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
