Apologies for the pic. My little one fell two days ago and cut her knee at school. When she got home I washed it and applied antiseptic cream. It seemed to be just a normal scrape but is now looking very weepy yellowish white goo and is quite red and inflamed .Also very painful. The white in the pic is the remains of the antiseptic cream I applied earlier. I've been bathing it with hot salted water three times a day and then applying a thin layer of the antiseptic cream. Is it ok do you think or do I need to bring her to the doctor. Asking here as our doctors are obviously very busy at the moment and I don't want to bring her unless it's definitely necessary

Call the GP, maybe you can send them a picture, maybe it is not necessary to go.
The child of a friend of mine had a skin rash and she had to send pictures and then had a telephone consultation.

Try a pharmacist first. Looks sore, but on the mend to me. Bless her.

OrigamiParrot · 21/10/2020 17:40

Personally I wouldn’t go to the doctor with that - I think the yellowish liquid aids the skin healing. I’d keep doing what you’re doing.

But obviously I’m not a medical professional, and if she’s in more pain than you’d expect from a scrape, perhaps give the GP a quick ring / submit an online consultation request if your surgery offers that, and attach that pic.

dementedpixie · 21/10/2020 17:43

I wouldn't keep washing it. Let it try to heal in peace

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 21/10/2020 17:44

See if they will give you a prescription for fusidic acid cream over the phone, that will sort it.

I'm a nurse that deals with wound care every day and definitely don't think it's anything to worry about :) definitely stop cleaning it so often though. I would advice putting a plaster on it big enough to cover the whole area (only because its weeping, otherwise I'd say leave it uncovered) and leave for a good 3/4 days, by then it should be nicely scabbed over and can be left uncovered. If redness around the area starts to spread it could be a sign of infection so just keep on eye on that. It's going to be sore for a few days, grazes can be so sore. Hope she feels better soon.

MushMonster · 21/10/2020 18:58

I thought the white was pus! If it is cream, apply a layer again (is this tea tree oil?), do not cover with plaster and do not make it wet. Water can make it infected. Air will dry it up and it should look better tomorrow. If not, pharmacist first. But it does not look that bad Flowers

Another nurse here and I agree get a waterproof plaster big enough to cover area and leave for a couple days.

pinkbalconyrailing · 21/10/2020 19:13

tbh it looks fine fair share of scraped knees here it does not look swollen or inflamed around the edges.

wash the wound, disinfect and cover.
get a big gel plaster (usually behind the counter at the chemist they have the big knee scrape size) and leave it on for a couple of days.

LaMadrilena · 21/10/2020 21:12

This brings back memories! I had tonnes like that when I was little, with the pus and everything. No harm done.

Thanks everyone appreciate all the tips Flowers I'm usually quite blase about scrapes and cuts but am a bit more easily worried at the moment and also aware that gps are so busy, especially now. The white stuff is the bit of cream left on her leg I had put a thin layer on it earlier and most has sunk in just leaving those bits around the edge
