Infant with Kidney Stone

Hi, this is my first post as I have just joined mumsnet. Are there any other babies out there with a kidney stone? We discovered that our DS had one when he was 3 just months old. He was really poorly and ended up in hospital with a urinary tract infection, they then discovered the stone. I was so surprised as there is no family history of kidney stones. My DS is now 17 months and you wouldn't know there was a stone there. He's a wonderful little boy. Anyway, we have had regular visits to the hospital, various scans and x-rays etc. They have now said that he is old enough to go ahead and use laser treatment to "blast" the stone. It's going to be so difficult as he is too young to explain to. I'm assuming that it will be a very painful experience for him to have to pass the broken up stone. I've done so much research on the subject but there is so little information about kidney stones and infants (one recent journal article said that the occurance rate in the UK was 2 in every million per annum). Anyone other parents been through a similar thing?

I had a kidney stone (well 'grit' really) and didn't actually know until the day I passed it out of my kidney and, yes, it was painful....the actual passing out of the body I missed (dr said I might notice some grit in my wee - I didn't)

Mum2Stan · 20/10/2004 13:09

Thanks for your welcome, really nice of you to post.

Mum2stan, sorry about being blunt about the pain thing - but it was! And welcome!

Mum2Stan · 20/10/2004 13:20

Blackduck, it didn't cross my mind that you were being blunt! In a way I hope that they do this sooner rather than later as I don't want going for a wee to become an issue for DS, so definitly want it out of the way by the time I start toilet training.

Mum2stan - hope it gets sorted - and that your posts on MN are mainly happy ones!

I had a kidney stone a while ago and it was the worst pain I have suffered. Yes it was even worse than child birth!

I've never heard if it inn children but just wanted to say hi and send my sympathies to your little DS.

mykidsmum · 26/10/2004 13:42

Hi i had a kidney stone during pregnancy and thought I'd gone into labour-doh!! It's good that it is not causing him any pain, do you know why that is?? I thought that kidney stones were painful until expelled either by treatment or naturally. have never heard of it in children i was told it was rare for my age and I was 23. Wishing you lots of love/luck and hope all is resolved soon.

mykidsmum · 26/10/2004 13:44

Oh and one more thing, passing the stone isn't that painful, just a bit uncomfortable, it is actually the process of the ureter contacting to get it along the tube that is painful, is the tone still in his kidney, this may be why there is no pain?

They can be very painful but homeopathy and supplements can help - each child is different so difficult to give precise remedies over the net - if you need any help and live in London area I see childern and baies with all sorts of health issues - [email protected].
