Baby with headlice - what can I treat it with?

DD is one year and has caught headlice from playing with older Children.

The Chemist would not sell me usual stuff as she is so young and told me to see the Doctor. I want to do something before Monday (and I am itchy now too!) I have heard about tea tree oil but I don't know what to do with it once I have it!

i combed her hair with a nit comb and have got most of them out already but I just know I will need to do more than this otherwise there would not be an epidemic in the country at the minute!

Do I also need to boil sheets and throw out hairbrushes etc or am I over reacting?

Help lovely MNetters!!!!

you dont have to do more than comb. but you have to do it every couple of days for 2 weeks. there is an epidemic cos people cant be bothered. i dont use chemicals on my kids, tried them and they dont work. lots of water and conditioner, wet lice cant move so cant run away! tea tree oil is to deter them, not sure if it helps once you have them. good luck

you can just use conditioner and keep combing yours and her hair, do it repeatedly for at least a week as they lay eggs and they take about that long to hatch.if your still not happy then take her to the docs and ask for some hedring hope this helps

Just put in lots of conditioner and comb out every 2-3 days for about a fortnight.

You don't need to boil the sheets or throw away hairbrushes.

hedrin is silicone based so no chemicals, and it's odourless so its not obvious that she has had nit lotion on her hair

Keep wet combing it with conditioner, she is much too young for anything chemical. You can get tea tree conditioner which I am told they don't like but chances are she won'thave that many. Just a case of regular checking and combing i'm afraid.

Don't think you have to boil sheets and throw out hairbrushes but i would to put my mind at ease.

DD had headlice when she was 8 months old. As her hair was still very fine, I just picked out the live lice I found, and combed out all the eggs.

You really don't ever need to use the horrible lotions and creams. Wet combing every other day for 2 weeks should do it, making sure you get out every single egg.

Tea tree oil is good as a deterent. Once you've got rid of them, you just add a drop to the final rinse water when you wash their hair. However, unless you think it's likely that she's going to be getting them regularly, I really wouldn't bother.

Dd is now 3 and plays with older children at the childminder every week. She's never caught them. I think she must have caught them from the toddler group the first time. And she passed them on to my MIL

Use either hedrin or lice attack. Both are very effective an non chemical. Don't throw away heair brushes - if you start doing that whe she starts school youll have to throw away a brush every couple of weeks!

Oh thanks everyone!

That was quick! Well I have combed my hair and did not find any but will keep up the combing, I hate the idea of using chemicals as she has eczema and I don't even use baby wipes as she gets nappy rash.

Thanks again, will keep combing.
