Consultant says no to vitamin d

My kidney consultant (I have stage 3b kidney disease) has consistently said no, when I asked him about taking a vitamin d supplement. He says he never advises anyone to take supplements.
I pointed out that I am dark skinned, don't get out much, and that he doesn't know if my vitamin d level is correct because he has never tested me for vitamin levels.
I am in two minds. I would prefer to take a low dose supplement, but don't want to go against his advice.
I have researched vitamin d and kidney disease and from what I read, it's safe to take it.

I was tired all the time. I went to GP and they took bloods. I had very low but D. Now I take 3 bit D3 tabs every day. Not so tired now and bloods normal.

He says he never recommends supplements.

That's entirely different from saying you shouldn't take supplements.

If he thought they would actually be harmful to you, he would presumably be saying so. But he isn't.

NICE guidelines say he should offer supplements if you are deficient. www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg182/chapter/1-Recommendations#investigations-for-chronic-kidney-disease-2

Deficiency is common in CKD but excessive amounts might possibly cause damage.

The evidence for vitamin D being beneficial for reducing severity in covid is circumstantial, rather than a scientific standard of proof but is growing all the time. I'd suggest a private test than asking him to follow NICE guidelines if you are deficient.

then not than.

I also have stage 3b kidney disease, & my consultant said exactly the opposite. My dad has stage 4 & his kidney consultant put on vitamin D, though advised natural D3 over the prescription stuff. Dads consultant even worked out how long a vitamin D loading dose was needed for based on his D levels.

I'd get a second opinion as bar ignorance, your doctors advice makes no sense Confused

I'd also suggest looking at pernicious anaemia/B12 deficiency, my consultant actioned that & thought my low levels played a part in my kidney. It definitely improved my kidney function & much more

BTW, after a 2 week loading dose of 20,000iu of D, with the K2 & magnesium it needs to work, I now take 10,000iu natural D3 in oil, with K2 etc 3 times a week. This was under my GPs & kidney consultant guidance. My GP has studied D separately & knows her stuff on it too

My dad had 3 weeks of 20,000iu & now the same as me for maintenance. The leg pain that stopped him walking & was put down to CKD & osteoarthritis went almost completely so he could walk again.
