Treatment for terrible nappy rash?

artichokes · 12/10/2007 20:45

DD 14 months. Never had bad nappy rash before. All of a sudden this week her whole nappy area is bright red and covered in hundreds of bumps. Tried loads of sudocream and frequent changes. Today it looks worse than ever and when I gave her nappy free time she kept clutching her fanjo and moaning. In the bath she clutched it continuously while looking at me in a pleading way.

How can I help her? Its horrible.

Sometimes it's like thrush and then what you need is an anti-fungal cream like Canesten.

Lizzzombie · 12/10/2007 20:49

Oh dear, your poor LO.
We had chronic nappy rash here last weekend.
No creams really worked, I put oilatum in his bath and after bathing twice a day for a week it cleared up.
Might work for you.

How can you tell if it is thrush as opposed to nappy rash?

Its so sad, she has just woken up for the second time tonight and I can only assume its because it is painful. Has anyone elses' LOs had it bad enough to interfere with sleep?

I've heard putting salt in the bath water works wonders (haven't had nappy rash for ages though so not had a chance to try it)

emkana · 12/10/2007 20:53

good explanation plus picture here

TheWiltedRose · 12/10/2007 20:54

My littleone suffers from terrible nappy rash and nothing thats been mentioned has worked til i found a cream called Camilosan you can find it in chemists its worked wonders!

ScottishMummy · 12/10/2007 20:55

try cannestan cream from GP for fugal infections/nappy rash.my wee one get nappy rash that breaks down skin/welts/severe inflammation

fruitymum · 12/10/2007 20:55

Metanium cream is very good - very yellow and stains everthing it comes in contact with. I found it more effective than Canesten . Loads of water to drink incase its a UTI and Ashton and Parsons teething powders incase its teething related.

TheWiltedRose · 12/10/2007 20:56

the camilosan had it gone in just two days and ds2 couldnt sleep a wink because it hurt him so bad it was terrible i always have a tube handy now but surprisingly it hasnt actually come back for 3 months since i treated him with the camilosan

Sazisi · 12/10/2007 20:56

sorry that should have been MY BABIES haven't had nappy rash for ages

Give her some calpol if you haven't already. poor love
DD2 did get that bad once or twice

millie99 · 12/10/2007 20:56

Another vote for metanium cream but dont get it on your clothes as it stains terribly

fruitymum · 12/10/2007 20:56

Aveeno emollient in the bath( its got oatmeal in it - very soothing)

EvangelinesMum · 12/10/2007 20:58

I used Metanium cream - available from Asda and I expect all chemists as well. Cost about £3.50. HTH

EvangelinesMum · 12/10/2007 21:00

Oops, x post with others

mrsmerton · 12/10/2007 21:02

I remember bicarb in the bath is good, as it is for chicken pox when they are hurting. Poor little bum!

Lubyloo · 12/10/2007 21:04

Metanium is excellent. Always cleared up DD's nappy rash very quickly.

Elibean · 12/10/2007 21:51

Lots of vaseline, followed by layer of Metanium. Lady behind me in queue in chemist's told me, and she was right - treats and protects in one go. My dd currently has dreadful nappy rash (antibiotics) and almost breathes a sigh of relief when I use this!

ScottishMummy · 13/10/2007 11:27

Elibean good tip my wee one suffers terribly. will try

nappyaddict · 13/10/2007 11:49

i would try canesten before trying anything else. if it thrush that will clear it up and if not then you won't have harmed her by using it and you can try something else.

DaisyWhoooo · 13/10/2007 11:55

The bumps really do sound like thrush, particularly as it came on quite suddnely. Definitely try some canestan or see the doctor.

ScottishMummy · 13/10/2007 19:21

cannestan is fabby - treats the fungal infection and inflammation, GP can give you the stronger prescription strength not avail across counter

hope it clears soon

artichokes · 14/10/2007 12:47

Thanks all. We got some canesten yesterday and put a tiny bit of bicarb in her bath (chemist said just a tiny bit as it can sting). today rash is looking slightly less angry and DD is not holding her hand over it anymore. Hopefully it will be gone soon.
