Anal fissures

whatsbinhappnin · 13/10/2020 12:36

For the last 10 months or so I've had recurrent anal fissures, around every 2 months. There's a bit of blood on the toilet paper (not much) and it really really stings when I go to the toilet

It seems to heal after a few days but then comes back.

I don't suffer from constipation or diarrhoea, so no straining or anything. I normally go to the toilet twice a day

Any experience or tips on how to stop them recurring?!

Following, also suffering and they are so stingy! I do have IBS so often get diarrhoea and have some external piles which also refuse to go away.

Can anyone help @emmathedilemma and I with our sore bums? Grin

Have you bern to the GP?

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/10/2020 18:41

*Been even

Posted too soon! Anyway I had this although they say it's constipation I got it after I had dihorrea for weeks after food poisoning. It was so painful. I was prescribed an ointment you rub on the fissure and it increases blood flow to the area. So promotes healing. It worked well and healed after a few weeks. It is called GTN ointment.

I got referred to a bum consultant (not official title) for this issue. For me I get them because my sphincter goes in to spasm which then causes ripping. I got some relaxant cream that I only used if I couldn’t relax to go.
The main thing the doctor said was that I should take fibrogel twice a day for the rest of my life.
I also get piles as well. I mainly get diarreah, apparently it’s not just constipation that causes issues.
I was offered an operation if no improvement but there is a high chance of incontinence.

@Plussizejumpsuit I haven't been to the GP as I wasn't sure what they could do. Interesting how yours started, I'm now wondering if mine is linked to 2 weeks of pretty much constant diarrhoea on holiday around a year ago... maybe I should get it checked out....

@Postmanbear bum consultant should be their official title! Were you aware of the spasms before you went to the bum consultant?

Please get checked out, its such a miserable condition and there are options, you dont have to live like this. Ive had mine for 8 years, just had surgery to Hopefully rid me forever x

BobbinThreadbare123 · 13/10/2020 19:30

I wasn't going to add to this thread but 'bum consultant' made me laugh out loud.
You need to go to the GP. You can get cream for it. In the meantime, you can slap on some Sudocrem to help. Don't let it get too bad. I have Crohn's disease so fissures are a thing and they're not nice!

Plussizejumpsuit · 13/10/2020 19:33

Yes I think GPs are told its constipation but I really never get constipated!
I thought it was just a hemorrhoid but I use anusol and it didn't get better so thought I'd bite the bullet and get it checked out.
The only thing with the ointm is it gives you a bit of a head rush as it increases blood flow. Definitely go to the GP it's quite common and they've seen it all before.

Stool softeners may help.

Take advice from your bum specialist.

Good luck 🍀

Postmanbear · 13/10/2020 19:35

😂 sorry I have no idea what the official name of a bum doctor is, before I saw one I had no idea it was a specialism!
When I get spasms I am desperate to go for a poo but literally can’t relax to let it go. It is not at all like constipation. Prior to the cream I would just wait in pain until it ripped and then I would be in agony for hours and I would leak poo for a few days. All very glamourous.

emmathedilemma · 13/10/2020 20:58

I went to the GP once when I had really itchy skin round my bum and ended up with what I think was antibiotic cream and tablets - from memory they gave me the cream but swabbed it and that came back as needing the tablets. I don’t think this is the same though as that was unbearably itchy and these are sore and sting when I go to the loo. I definitely don’t get constipated, if I took stool softeners I’d be in big trouble!! Any wok hasn’t touched my piles. Might ring the GP but don’t think they’ll let me in the surgery at the moment.

rootatoot · 13/10/2020 21:04

I had this during a period of incredible stress. So so painful. I don't remember what the doctor gave me but I did end up getting some calmoseptine cream. Not easy to find but can get it on ebay. Stings but also relieves. It's brilliant stuff.

SpideryPlants · 13/10/2020 21:18

I feel for you. I was given scheriproct I think and lactulose to soften the stool. I actually never used the scheriproct, maybe once or twice. What has cleared it up I think is eating more fibre. I eat around 30g a day (I put my food in one of those nutrition apps).

It is utterly miserable, sympathies.

Itonlytakesone · 19/10/2020 19:30

@whatsbinhappnin
I have an anal fissure Iv had it since pregnancy 19 months ago. Gp referred me to the colorectal clinic they can have a look to see what options are available based on how it looks. They tried me on a cream to apply first ..but this didn't work on me as mine is chronic so I'm heading for surgery next so currently waiting for an operation.

My consultant has put me straight on a Low FODMAP diet plus no dairy & gluten-free for 8 weeks to see how I am before he will fix the fissure as Iv reoccurring bouts of constipation and he thinks Iv got ibs. I'm also getting put on antispasmodic medicine as Iv been getting bowel spasms after eating. Hope this helps!

whatsbinhappnin · 19/10/2020 22:42

Thanks all
A week later mine seems to have healed for now...But I'm sure it will be back!

I'll have a look for the creams mentioned

@itonlytakesone I hope the new diet works for you!

Next time it troubles you you ought to get an appointment with your GP just to confirm the diagnosis.

Spraying the shower at the relevant area brings blessed relief - not a cure, but.....oh joy!!
