Dry eyes

I have suffered with dry/gritty/sore/red eyes since early 2019!

At the time, my GP advised to buy Systane eye drops from Boots and apply every hour. The cause is heavy device/computer usage (work and personal). I also suffer from mild seasonal allergies.

My eyes are still very dry and irritated now after using drops for so long, wondering what I should try next?

I have used Xalin night in the past, but can’t remember if it helped or not. I bought baby shampoo last week, seemed to be going well but now I have randomly developed a small stye Sad I’m so sick of having irritated eyes!

I have fry eyes, I have a prescription for visco tears works well for me. Maybe have a chat with the gp

There's no point in using baby shampoo if you don't have blepharitis. You need to pinpoint the eye cause(s) of the dry (rather than the enviromental causes) and if it's lipid/aqueous deficiency or meibomian gland dysfunction.

Your GP will not have the equipment to look at the front of the eye in enough detail, so you need to go and see an optometrist with an interest in dry eye, or ask the gp to refer you to the dry eye clinic at the local eye department.

Whilst not all, most dry eyes are caused by blocked eye glands. Look up the mgd eyebag on amazon. It's amazing. It takes about 2 weeks of use (10 mins a day) then massage eyes after (you can get videos on Google) for it to start to work. I prefer it because I think drops generally make eyes feel worse and wreck the balance. If you do need to use drops the odd time... Use blink intensive tears. Remember to look away every 20 mins on devices and blink lots also. Use omega 3. I hope all this helps xx

Are you on any medication that affects it? I had trouble on sertraline. It totally resolved when I (slowly and carefully) stopped using it.

Violetroselily · 13/10/2020 08:52

@picklemewalnuts thats really interesting. My dry eyes have got so much worse since I've been on sertraline, I had no idea there could be a connection

OP my optician recommended Xialin at night and Hycosan Extra for daytime. I am feeling some improvement after a couple of weeks

I was using an unbranded Carbomer gel, very cheap on amazon. Much cheaper than the branded one (viscotears?). You only use it night and morning, as vision is blurry for a minute.

I use drops called Thealoz Duo, they are great. Also omega 3 oil oral supplements.

Frappuccinofan · 13/10/2020 16:03

Thank you for all the tipsFlowers

Didn’t consider that there would be an underlying cause outside of the environmental factorsBlush I don’t take any medication - interesting that some could inadvertently cause this!

I may have been using drops which contain preservatives, the long term use could be the issue even. Haven’t managed to speak to my GP yet but bought Thealoz Duo and Xailin night to use in the interim.

@picklemewalnuts ooh, could you link to the unbranded Carbomer product you use please? Thanks in advance

Central heating and air conditioning dry out my eyes. I need to keep my indoor air humid.
