Hubby has found a lump

Hi, i am looking for some reassurance because i suffer with health anxiety and things like this i really struggle with.

Last night my husband found a lump under the skin to the right of his belly button. He has no idea how long its been there. Last week he did have issues going to the toilet, he was either constipated or had the squits / going more.

He went to the docs this morning, i thought they would say hernia. However apparently its not a hernia and he has to be referred to go for a scan. Doc didn't really say what it could be, just that any lumps in the area had to be scanned etc.... She did say " are you scared of bowl cancer" i mean wtf! my husband said well yeh, i then said what did she say and he said , she didnt say alot.

So all very vague and im freaking out and feeling sick. Any one had anything similar ?

Thanks in advance... ps hes fit and healthy no other issues.

The chances of a lump felt just under the skin being bowel cancer are very slim.

The GP is unlikely to able to directly refer for a scan, especially a CT scan.

They're doing the right thing, while needing to be non committal.

It's still very possibly a hernia! A 'quick feel' can't be conclusive. A scan of some sort will be useful.

But a subcutaneous lump, near the umbilicus, is very unlikely to be a tumour.

Thank you so much

I went to the GP last Friday with a lump just to the left hand side of my belly button. It’s a hard lump about the size of a blueberry, she touched it and said it was a fatty lump..!

DrDavidBanner · 11/10/2020 13:17

I had a umbilical hernia a few years ago related to fibroids that had distorted my uterus (lotd of fibroids!) Was picked up on an x ray then MRI. It was treated the same time I had my hysterectomy and I've had no trouble since.

It presented as a small lump just below my belly button about thumb size, and would pop out following physical exertion running or lifting so I had to scale down exercise. Sometimes it was uncomfortable/irritating and other times I wouldn't notice it.

Did your husband have a face to face or telephone appointment? A lot of people who I know have only be able to have telephone appointments due to Covid which leave a lot to be desired.

I hope thats all it turns out to be for your DH.

I do hope it's all 'something & nothing'.

On balance it's most likely to be a 'fatty lump'.

People do say the weirdest & stupidest things, Drs are people. They should have more sense, but they don't always.

I'm guessing what she meant was 'are you here because you're worried it's bowel cancer'. Then failed to follow that up with anything.

TRY not to worry as it's incredibly unlikely to be bowel cancer & if in the very unlikely event it is, the treatment for BC is very good.

Best wishes 🌷

Thank you for your reply it was much appreciated. He saw a doc face to face who examined him the lump can't be felt laying down but can when stood up. She said it wasn't a hernia and said he needs a scan and was all very Vaugue x

Thank you so much, I wasn't there so I'm not sure exactly what was said but that's how hubby said it was. I was like what she wasn't reassuring or anything he said no ! I hope it's a fatty lump and nothing to worry about x

It’s good they are being cautious; better a false alarm scan then none.

I think I’m a lumpy person as I also have a hard non moving lump in my breast and went for a scan at the breast clinic and that was also fine. The GP felt the breast lump And referred Straight away and was all good.

My tummy one is hard and doesn’t really move, but she was adamant it was a fatty lump.
Defo worth getting checked out though, hope his scan app comes through ASAP.

Any news?

But bear in mind, any lump that can 'disappear', like when lying down, isn't cancer.

DonLewis · 18/10/2020 18:57

Oh, gosh, I've just started a thread about a little hard lump on my stomach. Hope your dh gets on OK.

Miljea · 18/10/2020 20:09
