Has anyone here ever had a nasty experience with a tic bite?? Or had an infection from one?

I found a tic on my ankle about a week ago. I just pulled it off without realising what it was and then just flung it away as soon as I did. the site I pulled it from has been very red, swollen and angry but not itchy and there is no puss(sorry if tmi). It is a bit black.
I just want some reassurance that this is normal and that it will go away.

I have heard that if you don't remove a tic properly they can leave their heads in you [boak] and am quite anxious that this hasn't happened. Anyone know if this is true??

No idea how I go a tic btw. I haven't been in any long grass or near any likely animals.

You do have to be careful when you pull them out so as you don't leave 'remains' (sorry). If you are concerned, I'd check at your docs.

Go to the GP and get them to look at it carmenere.
Dh managed to get a tick bite while playing tennis in an urban park - I think the wet summer has been perfect for a tick population explosion.
His got infected and his GP prescribed heavy duty ABs as a precaution against a rare but annoying illness called Lyme's Disease. If missed it can cause chronic joint pain and other miseries.
Your bite sounds infected to me. The ABs cleared up dh's in no time.
Tortoiseshell's ds1 had this I think too. It's definitely been much commoner this summer.

Um I have been sick in bed all week with a fever, it is unlikely to be connected is it?

Marina · 11/10/2007 15:30

Doctor's, soon. But probably not connected. hope you feel better soon.

See here for symptoms and eminent treatability of Lyme Disease Lyme Disease

Whizzz · 11/10/2007 15:35

yes deffo get your self to the docs to get it check out Carmenere

Carmenere · 11/10/2007 15:38

I checked out some pics of the rash you would get and it fortunately doesn't look like that but still, if I am not better by Monday, I will go to docs. Thanks all x

Definately go and get it checked out, for the reasons given below. The symptoms it produces are very similar to what I get with my Fibromyaglia, and Lyme's Disease was one of the things they had to rule out with me before making the DX of Fibro.

The symptoms of Lyme's Disease can include

Muscle pains
joint swelling and stiffness
chronic fatigue
nervous system problems

Well seeing as I was in a high-risk malaria area in Africa two weeks ago (albeit with anti malarials and only for two days) and the blardy tic bite can you imagine what has been going around my mind as I lie in bed with aching bones and sweating profusely

I feel diseased

saltire · 11/10/2007 15:43

And we're probably not helping!

Marina · 11/10/2007 15:43

Oh god you poor thing. Not what you need at all!

Carmenere · 11/10/2007 15:46

I suspect it is only a bad bout of flu, but there is always the margin of possibility however on a brighter note I'm feeling quite a bit better today so I'm coming around to the idea that I'm not going to slip into a coma at any minute

my friend got lymes disease from a tic bite. She wasn't that unwell but the mark on her leg was enormous. She was treated with antibiotics I think, didn't tkae long as far as I remember.

Marina · 11/10/2007 15:53

No wonder your deadline was such a nightmare (did you manage it btw)

CarGirl · 11/10/2007 15:56

my friends dd got lymes disease and they weren't aware that she'd been bitten by a tic so please get it checked out, it came apparant when she got bells palsey type symptoms. They go camping in the UK a lot so the drs are very certain it was a tic bite that caused it.

northender · 11/10/2007 15:57

dh had tic bites a few years ago and about a week later they flared up and he had flu like symptoms. Again heavy duty antibiotics worked. Definitely get thee to Your GP.

Carmenere · 11/10/2007 16:03

Made the first deadline Marina, second one tomorrow and have everything in place for it and about a 3rd of it done. I know no one looks at them until Monday and won't notice if they don't get it until tomorrow afternoon.

I would go to docs sooner than Monday.

BIL had a tic bite recently (head stayed put) - mind you his led doubled in size and he was admitted for IV antibiotics. He got a row for leaving it too long. He should have had antibiotics earlier.

Tiggiwinkle · 11/10/2007 16:33

My brother-in-law was treated for Lyme's Disease last year after developing flu-like symptoms following a tic bite. As everyone said, get to a doctor sooner rather than later-it is a nasty disease.

belgo · 11/10/2007 16:37

Definitely go to the doctor's very soon - there is an increase in ticks this year due to the mild winter last year. Lyme disease, if left untreated, can cause paralysis.

Chances are you've just got a virus, but you really need to be checked by a doctor as soons as possible.

tortoiseSHELL · 11/10/2007 16:39

Yes, do go to the doctors! I had a tick bite a few years back, dh had one this year, we both got given antibiotics straight away as a precaution against Lyme Disease!

Sounds like you're having a bad time ((sympathy))

tortoiseSHELL · 11/10/2007 16:40

Carmenere, just read that you'd checked against the pics of the rash - what happened with me was that it swelled up hugely (took over my arm!), then went away, then came back as the classic 'target' rash. Which was when the doc gave the ABs.

Carmenere · 11/10/2007 16:46

It doesn't look like a rash anymore though, it now just looks like a big black and red bite(lovely)

But I hear you all, I will go to the doc's tommorow if I can get an appointment.

umm no time to read the whole thread, so sorry if this is has already been said.

I had a tick on the nape of my neck once, decades ago. After it was removed, it left a big lump (though given the location, I don't know what color that was) so I went to the dr about it - he made me have a tetanus jab because he said that tick bites are puncture wounds with similar risk.

That was in Australia though, don't know what they'd say here, but a black lump doesn't sound any good to me - even if it is still just the head in there, it will secrete poison for a while yet.

mears · 13/10/2007 14:00

any luck with appointment?

mears · 16/10/2007 10:45

Any update?
