Urine output vs input - what’s normal?

I’ve always thought I wee a lot - it’s a standing joke in my family that whenever we go out I always have to be near a toilet.

I mentioned it to the doctor and she told me to keep a record over a few days of input vs output. There’s even an app you can get on your phone to log it!

So I’ve been doing this (on days when I am at home obviously) and religiously measuring my fluid intake, and weeing in a plastic measuring jug to measure the output.

Typically, I drink about 2100ml a day (combination of tea/coffee but mainly water) and my urine output is about 2800ml. So my output is 700ml more than my input.

I know there is water in food as well, but is this normal? I feel like my body is not retaining any fluid and I’m constantly needing to wee.
Does anyone know what is normal?

I'd love to know this too, as I'm the same OP.

Normal urine output is half ml per kg per hour

Khajit · 06/10/2020 14:48

Does it make a difference if you cut out caffeine? It's a diuretic, so it makes your body produce more urine.

hippohector · 06/10/2020 14:54

@ Elizaeliza - sorry, I’m being really thick here.. if I weigh 68kg how do I work that out?

0.5 x 68 = 34
34 x 24 (hours) = 815
So 815ml per hour??
That’s not correct is it?

A bit, although I only drink two cups of tea a day (600ml total)

That would be 815ml per day not per hour! Now where's that old jug......

hippohector · 13/10/2020 16:46

815ml per day?Hmm
I urinate between 2500ml - 3000ml a day Confused

I think your input and output are pretty normal OP. I recently had an appointment with a bladder nurse and my figures were similar and she didn’t comment or note it in the letter to my GP, so I assume it was normal.

How many wees are you doing a day? Up to 8 is considered normal.

emmathedilemma · 13/10/2020 17:55

Based on the numbers given by @Elizaeliza it's 815ml a day but a quick google suggests urinary output is normal in the range of 0.5-1.5ml/kg/hour or even up to 2ml/kh/hour.
1.5ml/kg/hour for 68kg is 2448ml a day so you're probably at the top end of normal but nothing too extreme.

FlitterMouse · 13/10/2020 18:00

What about insensible loss like breathing and sweating which I thought was about 500mls a day.

missblueeyes · 13/10/2020 18:05

has diabetes been ruled out?

missblueeyes · 13/10/2020 18:06

Symptoms You Should Know
Excessive thirst.
Frequent urination.
Fatigue.
Losing weight without trying to.
Blurred vision.
Slow healing sores.
Frequent infections.
Tingling in your hands or feet.

hippohector · 13/10/2020 22:25

The doctor did a dip test and apparently my glucose levels were ok from that - never had a blood test though.
I get thirsty a lot, urinate frequently and experience fatigue, but don’t have any of the other diabetes symptoms And definitely not losing weight without trying... in fact quite the opposite Blush

Not sure about normal urine output - but should avoid input if possible Grin.

ditavonteesed · 14/10/2020 13:40

Half a ml per kg per hour is not the expected output, it's the mini an that's acceptable to show working kidneys.

If you had more output of such a high level you would be losing weight.
There is a lot of water in food.
