Is anyone a dentist? Having a panic!

I noticed a small, bony (to me, anyway) lump inside my mandible last week. It’s adjacent to my premolars on the inside of my gum. It’s on the left side.

Now, I studied SLT, so I remember that we touched on some common oral growths, and it does seem to fit the criteria for a mandibular torus - however, I also remember being told that they’re usually bilateral, and this is unilateral. There are no other symptoms and I’m not even sure it’s new - I remember having a vague thought months ago about my mouth being a funny shape - but I’m an anxious soul and my brain has latched onto it.

It’s not very big - only about half a fingertip wide, and it follows my jaw line, so not a very lumpy lump. I’ve phoned around a few local dentists, but they’ve all said that they can’t see new patients until the new year, because of COVID (I am currently not registered with a dentist). I’ve tried to explain a little, but since it doesn’t seem like an emergency, they aren’t allowed to see me.

My brain is going a little crazy about it being cancer or something else sinister. The rational side of my brain says that it could have been there for ages without me noticing, so there’s probably no need to panic.

Can anyone offer reassurance or advice?

Thanks!

Sorry, not a dentist and have no experience of this but can understand that you would be worried and want to be seen. Dentists are doing emergency appts so I would have thought if you said you had a lump/growth, that would be reasonable enough reason to be seen. I would keep phoning around, if not contact your GP, I imagine they can refer to dental hospitals

Thanks! I seem to be hitting a brick wall no matter which practice I phone and the GP wasn’t interested. Looks like I’ll just be waiting til the new year and hoping it’s nothing serious 🙁

Hi! I have the same thing! Did you find o what it was

Sparkleandshine1 · 15/11/2020 03:57

I'm a dentist. Can you take a photo? It does sound like a mandibular torus so please try not to worry. They are commonly unilateral so it would fit. Send a photo if you can...

Another dentist- also happy to look at a picture. Sounds like a mandibular torus to me too.
What’s with all the insomniac dentists? Grin

Kraytay456 · 15/11/2020 05:08

How do I post a picture ?

I can’t really see much op but that is kind of good news! Tori are the same colour as the surrounding gum and just feel hard and bony. If you are really concerned you will have to get someone to look at it clinically. I am a private dentist and we have been open and busy since July, call your nhs dentist if you have one or it may be easier to see someone privately to get reassurance. I hope you get it seen to and feel better soon x

Firstbornunicorn · 15/11/2020 11:02

Thank you @Sparkleandshine1. I’ve kinda stopped worrying about it since. Sort of realised there’s similar on the other side but even smaller and I know pathology doesn’t really do symmetry!

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I too have a bony lump on my upper right wisdom tooth gum. It's on the inside not the cheek side. The lump is hard and the same colour of the gum. It doesn't move nor hurt. Could it be a tori or just the roots? I don't know how long it has been here, only noticed it two weeks ago.

I had the upper right molars x-rayed but didn't mention the lump to the dentist because I only noticed the lump the day after. Surely the dentist would noticed anything unusual when checking the x-ray? He didn't say anything.

Nets888 · 18/11/2020 11:29

The lump is under the skin, you can feel it more than see it.

As long as it has not grown you should be okay! I just got mine checked out by my dentist and she said the same thing! As long as it has not grown in the two weeks you've been whatching it then you have nothing to worry about!❤️
Nets888 · 18/11/2020 14:42

@Kraytay456, thanks! I've an appointment with the hygienist soon so I'm going to check with her.

Where is your lump?

Mine was on my gum line under my tounge! It was a hard bump so I was very nervous. But my dentist said there completly notmal! The only time you need to worry is if your bump has grown within the two week whatch period or it changes shape

Nets888 · 22/01/2021 14:05

So I went to the dentist and asked him to check the lump.

This hard painless lump is near the top right wisdom tooth. It's located between the roof of the mouth and the gum. It's under the skin, same colour as the gum.
Dentist xrayed it and said it's a bone fragment and nothing to worry about. I didn't ask more questions buy what is a bone fragment? I have had no extractions.

user1488481370 · 11/03/2021 17:45

@Firstbornunicorn sorry, I know this was from a couple of months back, just wondering if you ever found out what this was. Mine sounds almost identical to yours (but my bigger one is on the right hand side of my mouth) and I’m pretty sure I’ve got a much smaller, hardly detectable one on the other side in the same place.

Danielle8p · 22/03/2025 17:56

@toothfairycat are tori common please?

ACCx · 18/10/2025 15:34

Any of the dentists still on this thread at all and could help a very anxious person out? X
