and wondered if anyone has any experience of it. It's just a 'normal' one NOT the hormone one. It hurt quite a bit whilst being put in and now I have period type pains. Having read a few old MN conversations I'm not sure I've done the right thing. Anyone got anything good to say for it!

I've had one for a couple of years and see it as the least bad of many evils. Hate condoms, don't want to do hormones of any type and have tried and failed with the cap.

The periods are foul, like a mini miscarriage some months very heavy for at least two or three days and drag on for a week, but amazingly you get used to it. I do think you need to take extra iron though. I'm not at all medical and you'd think you'd lose the same amount of blood regardless of your method of birth control but I seem to lose a lot more with the coil (for one or two days need super plus tampons and a towel - sorry to be graphic)
On the plus side you can have sex whenever you like without anxiety - I reason that even if it's not frequent at least it can be spontaneous. For me that makes it all worthwhile

I've always had really light periods so hopefully things will be ok. I just feel really nervous about it being 'in there, sorry if that sounds stange. Sorry to here you've got polycystic ovaries

Must confess had the coil fitted as emergency as can't take morning after pill so I didn't have much time to think/research it. Dh and I are just not ready for another child right now.

1st time I tried to have one fitted it was too painful and they gave up (think it was a mirena) then they tried just an ordinary one and that was fine, slightly heavier periods but otherwise wouldn't know it was there. After dd I had another one fitted and this time my periods are lighter than they were in the first place! Hope it works out for you and the pains go away.

suedonim · 19/10/2004 19:30

I've had an ordinary coil and was quite disappointed, tbh, having viewed it as an ideal solution. My periods became horrendously heavy, to the extent that I wasn't able to go out some days. Then I started spotting inbetween times and eventually had to have it removed. But my experience seemed more extreme than anyone elses's I know, so maybe that's exceptional and you'l be fine!

dogwalker · 19/10/2004 19:37

I've had my ordinary coil in for 8 years now, it's due to come out next year and I don't know what we're going to do - like cll i don't like condoms and didn't want hormones. It's been very good, my periods did get heavier but not too extreme, although now towards the end of it's life-span I am sometimes spotting in between periods. Think dh is going to have the snip.

rosies · 20/10/2004 16:50

i've had ordinary coils for 20 years (omg!!)... not the same one, you understand!

periods can be quite heavy for one day and often hang about for a week but i dont get period pains, and never really did, so thats been fine. certainly after having babies, the putting in and removing was a piece of cake... compared to my first when i was 19! lol i remember it quite clearly... it was the day the sex pistols got bill grundy sacked!

Cranberry · 20/10/2004 17:00

:0 Rosies. I'm feeling much better about it now. Thanks to all who replied. Hopefully the spotting will stop soon and cramps go away. I keep having strange thoughts that the strings will get entwinned around dh when we're 'at it' and it'll come!!!!

SS - Dr says you can leave it in upto 7 years, that god. Not the most pleasent experience. From what everyone says it does seem to cause heavier periods but I'm yet to find out. My periods have got heavier as I've got older though.
