Poor love - she has been through a rotten time. Went in for op on gall stones. They removed 18. She then had another op as was still in a lot of pain and I think bile duct was blocked. She then had another op - not sure what for as she is in UK and I am in Budapest so haven't managed to get all details. She then got a chest infection.

I phoned today and she has been moved to another ward. Actually managed to speak to her and she says she is on a side ward and having barrier nursing as has an infection. I ask what and she just said "um you know". So I said MRSA and she said yes. Not sure why she didn't want to mention it out loud.

Apparently she may be allowed home at weekend for a few hours if someone can take her.

So - I've heard scare stories of course but just how dangerous is MRSA now? Apparently it is in the wound.

A lot depends on her basic state of health and constitution Budababe. If they do her barrier nursing properly and she is already well enough to be able to come home for a few hours at the weekend, I am sure she will be fine.
But MRSA is never a nice thing to have.

Thanks Marina - i just googled and it says that people who catch it in hosp are 7 times more likely to die of it than non-hosp infections. Please God she will be OK.

She has diabetes and has had a hip op a few years ago and ops on hands and shoulders. Suffers from vertigo too. But is very active and busy and positive. She sounds a bit diminished though.

Her Mum is 101 and although her Mum lives alone with carers in and out, she went into a respite place when MIL went into hosp as MIL is her main carer really. GMIL not happy in respite place. So she will be worrying about her too.

Fingers crossed she will be OK. She is DH's step-mum and is lovely. Mad as a mad thing but lovely.

Oh, love
Being previously fit and active for her age is a big plus, I am sure of that.
Focus on the fact they are letting her home. I am assuming that must mean that she is not overwhelmed with the infection - it must be local to the wound.
I'm not at all well-informed about MRSA but I am an example of someone who caught clostridium difficile while recovering from my second c-section, so I do know about scary stats and press reports. That one kills a lot of people too. My mother is still having vapours about it all four years on.
Who will be taking her home? Does she have a good woman friend, or someone else who can give you an honest report on how she really is? It might be the strain of the extended stay in hospital that is making her sound low, rather than the MRSA per se.

Sorry Marina - had to go out.

She has a really good friend who will prob take her home. I know that if she were really bad they wouldn't let her home. So that is good I think.

She prob also sounds down as she went in for a routine op, ended up with 3 ops and a collapsed lung and now this.

Fingers crossed. Trying to think of something nice to send her to cheer her up.
