Aching,heavy legs

Hi
I'm 53& last couple of weeks I've had very achey, heavy feeling legs.
My right one, today,is being particularly painful.
I work at our local primary school as a breakfast club supervisor &a lunch time supervisor.I don't drive so walk up&back twice a day.its a 15min walk each time,so half HR in the morning then half hr again at lunch time.
Sometimes they feel like lead!!
They feel tired to walk sometimes too like I have to push myself on to get through it.
Any ideas as to if it's something I should be worried about&maybe see Dr about or not?
I'm taking painkillers.

Have you tried a magnesium spray? Look into that maybe.

I had this last week. I'm coming up to 49 so I'm assuming it's linked to peri menopause. It was just as you describe and kept me awake all night one night. I used magnesium spray which helped a little and then - to my actual embarrassment here - I read how placing an unwrapped bar of ivory soap in your bed by your feet works. So I put two bars of imperial leather down there (I know - I was actually shaking my head as I did it ) and whether it was coincidental or not .... no pain since.

So I'm not actually recommending ivory soap in the bed but you know, it doesn't do any harm! I'm recommending the magnesium spray as it sounds like restless leg syndrome to me or a form of it. Paracetamol worked better for me than ibuprofen and also hot baths with Epsom salts

Thanks.do yrs feel heavy&ache while you're walking too or just in bed? Mine are when I'm walking too
I'm on hrt estrogen only patches for last 4 yrs for really bad mood swings due to Meno so I don't think it can be related to that.

Both. Had it during the day when walking or resting and then at night. It comes and goes but it's fine right now due to magnesium, err the soap and I've also made an effort to drink more water too

Maybe see a dr if you're struggling and self help remedies aren't cutting it ?

babayjane67 · 05/10/2020 15:51

Ok thanks for that.will see if I can get some magnesium spray or tablets or something.see if it helps.
I've always drank loads of water since I was a kid!lol

I would read up a bit about magnesium before buying some. There are lots of different types and some are better than others for specific symptoms - some can give you diarrhoea too. The cheap ones from the supermarket are not the best - but even these can help.

Have your thyroid tested. When mine is low my arms and legs feel really heavy, like wading through treacle. Worth checking out just in case.

This was my first symptom of the peri menopause. It felt like I’d been on a 10 mile hike, my legs ached all the time. Soon after that all my joints started to ache. I would phone your GP.

Frappuccinofan · 05/10/2020 17:05

I felt similar to this when I had a vitamin d deficiency.

Thanks for all yr replies.
Im ruling out menopause as am already on hrt estrogen only patches&have been for about 4 yrs.so don't think it can be that.
Reality exists that's good to know about the magnesium thanks.
Think I may have to have a chat with the Dr.
I have googled it&it comes up with lots of different things!

Well that doesn’t sound awfully proactive - if you want to go for blood tests you can?! What are they testing you for?

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 09/10/2020 11:28

Honestly I despair of GPs when they behave like this. Do they honestly think we all just go “oh I’m a bit under the weather, I’ll go and get some blood tests done for the fun of it!” Most of us have been struggling for months if not years, trying vitamins, superfoods, exercise, more sleep etc before finally giving in and convincing ourselves it might be something we can’t fix ourselves. FFS, your GP sounds useless if they can’t think of anything at all that could make you feel like this.

Having legs that feel like lead is a common thyroid complaint, and menopause is a typical time for the onset of thyroid issues.
