Has anyone any experience of having a ct colonoscopy. I have read several threads from people who have had the usual colonoscopy but not this newer procedure. Hoping someone can give me some information about this procedure as I have an appointment for one and have no clue about it.

Olderwhynotwiser not myself but I’ve heard it’s a less invasive and quicker procedure than the usual one, hopefully it’ll become more widely available. Let us know how it went.

Thanks for replying Oldmum55. I am hoping it won't be as stressful as the usual type colonoscopy. Maybe not many people have had these yet, hence the shortage of supplies. I will come back and let you know how it goes. Not for another 10 days yet. Grin

I know all about them but haven’t had one myself.

So you will have to take the same bowl preparation (with a few tweaks and diet changes) as you would for a colonoscopy so you bowel is ‘clean’ so that can be an experience!

Once you get on the CT table the small tube only goes into the back passage rather than any further. They may put up a little balloon in you back passage to create a seal - this can be uncomfortable but breathe through it and the feeling will ease off. After that you will usually be attached up to a machine to inflate you with gas so your tummy will swell up and you may feel uncomfortable ( like you have a lot of gas). I would say expect a little discomfort but speak up if you are in pain. Once you are all inflated they will do a couple of scans with a dye injection one on your back and one on your stomach.

You will are all done you will obviously be very gassy but that is it.

Thank you Lucked. I feel a bit more assured. Do you know how long the process takes and whether I would need pain killers or sedadive?

The actual process will take about half an hour but with Covid but they will talk to you before hand and may want you to stay after for a short while. Also with Covid everything seems to take longer.

You will likely be given buscopan to help the bowel relax but no pain killers or sedatives are required.

I've just has a regular colonoscopy and the only advice I would add that they didn't give in the hospital would be to use a barrier cream between 'expulsions' when having the prep the day before. I spent all night singing Johnny Cash, Burning Ring of Fire.
