Has anyone ever had a reaction to deodorant?

My armpits are so sore! Both lymph nodes are swollen but the whole area (where you would spread deodorant) is so painful! There are some slight red patches too.

Normally I use a Mitchum roll on but I decided to try their all natural stick, I used it for two days and decided I didn’t like it so went back to roll on and now they’re so sore

I’ve check the stick and can’t see anything I would react to. But I don’t feel ill at all so I can’t just blame the lymph nodes. I used it post shave so perhaps it just reacted badly to sensitive skin.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Not soreness but dh has a reaction which stained his shirt underarms, the deodorant itself did not stain it we worked out whatever was in it reacted with him sweating did it ot was genuinely weird

Hi yes, a lot of deodorants bring me out in sore red rash. Dove sensitive in any format, is usually fine for me. Probably not as powerful as Mitchum, but no-one has complained 😁

gretagreengrapes · 30/09/2020 20:25

Yes many times! I only now use Mitchum spray or nothing. It took quite a few days to go down each time, very annoying!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 30/09/2020 20:28

Oh yes, can only use Dove or Sanex, everything else makes me itch like crazy

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 30/09/2020 20:30

Lots of them give me something that looks and feels like sunburn. I currently use Mitchum roll on and it's been fine for the last 6 years or so.

Ireallywantsomechips · 30/09/2020 20:39

Oh phew! I thought it was a bit odd because I’ve never reacted before but you’ve all reassured me!

I don't know about the Mitchum one, but some 'natural' deodorants are just bicarb which burns your skin off until eventually you're desensitised to the alkali damage. They claim some bollocks about needing time to adjust and toxins coming out.

I'm not allergic to anything else, but Nivea roll-on always gives me excema, so now I just stick to Dove.

lentilsforlunch · 30/09/2020 20:51

Was it a crappy old razor?

Ireallywantsomechips · 30/09/2020 21:35

@lentilsforlunch ooooo it might have been! I thought it was brand new but now I think about it I don’t know if it was from the pack or next to the pack!

Yes I have - I switched to Dove original too and have never looked back.
I can use something stronger on the occasional day if needed without a reaction now.

SingingSands · 30/09/2020 21:46

Yes, a few years ago I had an awful reaction to Nivea roll on. Red, itchy, bumpy sores, and it was the height of summer! Awful.

I only use Dove now and it's fine.

MoonSauce · 30/09/2020 21:54

Salt rock see through lumps (rather than the spray or gel) shouldn’t react like that but it doesn’t mean they can’t cause it. I never have a problem with my Mitchum but I have had problems with the expensive small kind which is meant to help those of us with excess sweating - not Trust, it’s available in Tesco and Asda etc. That one made my armpits absolutely raw. If you want to try something different, I use a Lush deodorant bar, it has patchouli in it and you rub it on your pits before you’ve dried yourself post-shower (or pop it under the rap to wet it) and I’ve never had an issue with it.

Montybojangles · 01/10/2020 08:44

Yes, the only one I can use is the Dove original stick deodorant. Anything else and after a few days they are so sore.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 01/10/2020 08:47

yup, I itch to everything. Have a couple on rotation as that seems to help keep it down. The natural ones are better, but are usually not anti-perspirant. I tried making some but they often including baking powder which definitley makes me itch. I have heard good things about Native but haven't tried it yet.

Ashmarie · 01/10/2020 13:37

Had the same when using natural deodorant (Wild), it was so sore and swollen! It has calmed down now after I’ve been using it for a few months, but I can’t use it directly after shaving or it turns red again.

Mumsnut · 01/10/2020 13:41

Twice after shaving + deodorant my armpit skin has turned red, sore, ultimately black and then peeled off

It was bloody painful.

Ireallywantsomechips · 01/10/2020 17:43

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I checked and it was definitely a brand new razor! So I’m assuming it was the deodorant, it’s looking and feeling better today!

I’m going to be very vigilant in future! Ouch 😣
