Baby with thyoid problem....anyone else?

Hi, my DS2 (10 months) has raised TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). He's been prescribed medication.

I am wondering if any else has (had) a baby with thyroid issues? What alerted you to have his / thyroid investigated, and what was the outcome?

My DS is very lethargic, and slow in his development. We are really hoping that the medication may help (were told that even if it had no effect on his development, it won't do any harm).

Thanks,

I had overactive thyroid diagnosed as a child (aged 8) - raisd TSH is over-active I presume? I am happy to chat about all things thyroid if you want!

TheBlonde · 10/10/2007 20:32

Raised TSH is underactive

No experience with children sorry
Mine were checked at birth as I am hyperthyroid

Have you been referred to a paed or an endocrinologist?

Thyroid UK may be some help

Hi mm - my DD2 has congenital hypothyroidism - no thyroid production of her own so on complete thyroxine replacement (just a daily pill). She regularly sees a consultant and was diagnosed as a newborn with that heel-prick test thingy. She is much slower to reach developmental milestones than DD1 but I think this is just her personality / general 2nd baby stuff as mentally she's all there. Happy to chat more if that's any help?

Thanks for your responses, do really appreciate them.

When DS2 is awake and alert, he is REALLY awake and alert, but he does spend a lot of time sleeping and is slow reaching his milestones (so slow that a ped told us that he would need care for the rest of his life...we think the comment was premature if not completely unnecessary and we intend on making a complaint but that is another story....)

Interesting Sparkletastic that your DD was / is slow developing, I was saying today it would be great if this was "just" his problem - hopefully if the medication makes him awake more he will have more opportunities to learn and develop...

I was supposed to pick up his medication today but the hospital has "lost" it, so hope to get it tomorrow.

He spent Monday and Tuesday in hospital for tests, and late yesterday he did see a endocrinology registrar - they want to repeat the thyroid function tests in a month, and then see him again in endocrinology in 3 months.

Thanks for the Thyroid UK link,

DD2 started her medication at 2 weeks but beforehand she was always asleep except for when feeding (and DH and I were busy congratulating ourselves on our easy baby ). Once meds kicked in she was still a good sleeper but more alert for longer periods. Are you in USA mm? Why such a late diagnosis - are tests not done on new-borns where you are? Can't believe that Paed comment - what an arse!! Our consultant says thyroid babies catch up very quickly nowadays as long as their thyroxine is properly controlled and long-term there is no developmental lag.

mm22bys · 10/10/2007 22:46

No in UK. Don't know if thyroid test done on newborns, tend to think not. He was tested back in June but was only slightly abnormal. After ped's assessment was referred back to neuro to get to bottom of his problems who was very keen to run as many tests as possible on him, including thyroid function.

hopefully the meds might do some good....

we're hoping he's just "delayed" - and that even if he is "late" he'll still get there...(better late than never...)

Thx...

Sparkletastic, I was wrong, I just checked DS's health book, and several newborn tests are done, including one for hypothyrodism. PKU, sickle cells, Cystic fibrosis. All his newborn tests were normal....

Ahh he must have a different form of trouble to my DD then but hopefully just as responsive to treatment. We've always been reassured that thyroid babies reach milestones later but do get there and are totally norm after a year or so's treatment.

nappyaddict · 11/10/2007 09:37

i've had it ever since i was a baby. i think it was picked up from birth. as i got older i had to have loads of blood tests cos as you grow the dosage has to keep being changed. i don't remember if i ever had a bad experience but i was petrified of needles and blood tests for years. still quite scared of needles but can just about manage a blood test if i squeeze my eyes shut and pray for it to be over. sorry went a bit o/t there!!

hi, my daughter has just turned 3 and was born with no thyroid gland so has been on thyroxine since she was a few days old. I'm starting to get a little worried about her, because she has always been a little slower to reach her milestones than her older siblings, and just seems to be a very young 3 iyswim. Maybe it's just the way she is, I don't know....

Bster1 · 05/02/2009 15:02

Hi my daugher was diagnosed with an etcopic thryoid (which means her thryoid gland does not work properly) at 2 weeks old through the heel prick test. She takes thyroxin every day and is now 6. Her development has to date been normal and she is reading and writing well at school. At present I have no concerns about her. Over the years I have met a few other mums with similar children and the kids all seem to be doing fine. Need any other info?
Happy to help.
