Ds is just over 2yrs.He has abit of a cold but not to bad.My worry is every now and again he'll start to cry like he is in pain.He will want me to pick him up then put him down.He has done this for the last 10min and now he has gone to sleep on me.He did this afew time yesterday too.He is crying again now but half asleep. It looks like he is abit yellow across his nose and cheeks too.I'm going to the doctors this evening, but any advice for now. Thanks

You'll probably find that when you get the cold in a couple of days you know exactly how he is feeling.

He is probably just feeling horrid, obviously tired and not sure how to deal with it.

Calpol and cuddles.

The yellow keeps coming and going,so not a bruise. He is asleep at the moment, but i have noticed he keeps touching his ear.I'm using calprofen and lots of cuddles. It's just the yellow that worrying me.When he starts to cry,i think he's in pain and he's bring his knees upto his tummy, but i don't think he has tummy ache.

When my DD was small if she got ill and wasn't eating she would get the yellow tinge on the nose - I always gave her something sweet immediately and that solved the problem. (I did this because when she was in hospital once she got the "yellow nose" and the blood tests showed her liver needed sugar which they injected in through her drip).

madmommy6 · 10/10/2007 14:53

flamingtoaster thanks for making me believe i'm not going mad.I'm sure some people think i'm seeing things. He had some juice then went to sleep.Taking him to doc's in awhile.

My poor ds has a ear infection,in boths ears and a throat infection.Doctor says to keep i eye on the yellowness,lo's can get
jaundice when unwell. So if it goes into his eyes we have to take him back.

and antibiotics

Hope he feels better soon

madmommy6 · 11/10/2007 09:40

Had abit of a up and down night with poor ds.I can tell when the calpol is wearing off,he starts crying in pain again, til the next lot starts to work.
Gp has said to try not to give antibiotics, has it doesn't help clear the infection any quicker. So i will see how he get on today.

flamingtoaster · 11/10/2007 10:14

Sorry you and ds didn't have a good night. Hope he's feeling better soon and that the yellowness doesn't come back. It is worrying when it happens - daughter developed it once at the airport, luckily when we were on the way home. She had been off colour for a day or two so I quickly gave her a sugary biscuit (she was delighted!) and it disappeared.

loopylou6 · 11/10/2007 10:15

madmommy im sorry, but i dont agreew ith your doctor, i really think your little boy needs the antibiotics, especially with a double ear infection and a throat infection, IME and i have 2 children, antibiotics clears up infections pronto, infact my dd (3) has just had tonsilitus, and the doc gave be ab's and told me that tonsilitus responds very quickly to ab's and she should be feeling much better in 24 hours. Please use the antibiotics.

seeker · 11/10/2007 10:21

I thought the current thinking is that with ear infections, they clear up 24 hours faster with antibiotics than with nursing type care alone. If it's really bad, then it's worth taking the abs for the sake of the 24 hours, but if it's not, then it's much better to let the body deal with the infection.

Lots of fluids, warmth, cuddles, stories and cbeebies. And chocolate is very useful for mothers in these circumstances!

madmommy6 · 11/10/2007 13:17

I must say i have alway thought infection= antibiotics. At the moment ds has been doing ok with just calpol and lots of cuddles.Although i will get the antibiotics when dh gets home later.Ds has been playing this morning but i can see him going down again,he's due for some more calpol.I am hoping he'll have asleep,so i can get something done around the house.

lol seekers i've just have some chocolate, but ds hasn't eaten his.I better put it away before he goes to sleep,or i'll eat that too.

My DS has had recurring ear infections (none since May though luckily), and he always get anti-biotics straight away with no questions asked. He does get very ill though with amazingly high temperatures. He has had pneumonia though so maybe that might have something to do with it, i'm not sure.

Bilateral ear infection AND throat inf does sound like a triple whammy though and I would have definately expected anti-biotics.

sarak54321 · 11/10/2007 13:38

Hiya

Antibiotics work for things bacterial, but if its viral then ab's can't touch it. (Hope that's not stating anything too obvious. Not meaning to offend!). Doc is right to proceed with caution about ab's for ear infection as commonly not bacterial but I can see why it's tricky with an added dimension of sore throat and why you'd wnat to be extra vigilant. If it persists they can do swab or gunk sample check to see whether ab's relevant. If ab's do get given, always remember acidophilus too - so you can make sure you top up the good bacteria that gets killed off by the ab's too. (Biocare is very good make, also solgar's ABCdophilus; lots of the own brands aren't such good quality).

Also, here's a link to ear infection info that's worth reading - some practical stuff and info (towards the bottom of this page on the link; you can also download it as a PDF in the articles box as it was a magazine article too).

Ds had pneumonia when he was 10 mths old.To cut a long story short,he would'nt be here now if i hadn't acted has fast as i did the night i rush him to a&e.He spent aweek in icu.I had spent aweek going backwards and forwards to the doctors, with them saying it was just a cold. From then on they have been very good, but last night i had to see a out of hours doctor.
Thanks everybody i'm going to start him on the antibiotics.Novacane it's just brought all that back to me.I never want to be there again.Surely it will be better to give them to him even if he doesn't need them.Than not to give them and he gets worse.iykwim.

madmommy6 · 11/10/2007 13:54

Sara you have just said what i thought, about the antibiotics. But now i'm really confused.Do i follow the doc's advice and hold off with them, like i did when he was 10mths old.Or give them to him even if he may not need them.
I can't get the link to work.

Hi madmommy6

Its good to avoid ab's whenever poss but I can see why it's a really confusing and worrying one given what happened before. Sorry I can't give a definitive answer. Fingers crossed the doc's a good 'un and if he doesn't think it's bacterial then he's probably right. If it persists it might be a sign that it's become bacterial/infected so def good to keep vigilant on it.

Hmmm... I wonder why the link wouldn't work. If you cut and paste this into your browser does this work instead? Then just click on babies and children - ear infection article is on that page (also on the right in the articles box as a PDF).

Hi Madmommy, how is DS? Did you start the AB's?

Unfortunately I know exactly what you mean about the back and forwards to the docs bit, we did that for a week before DS was diagnosed with pneumonia. In hindsight he had probably had Pneu for about 48 hours by the time we rushed him to out of hours- all because I thought the doctors were right in the surgery and he just had flu or something.

The first 48 hours were very grim indeed in hospital- I, like you, NEVER want to go through that again- so if it means he has AB's when he doesn't really need them so be it! My GP obviously agrees with me, or else he wouldn't prescribe them. (BTW I have changed my GP since the pneumonia fiasco)

AFAIK, it IS dangerous to prescribe AB's in the early stages of an illness, where there is nothing specific showing and no signs of infection, but showing the Temp, lethargy etc (there is a name for this phase of illness which escapes me), as ABs could mask the symptoms of serious disease (ie any meningism etc)

But when they have been snotty and grotty for a few days with whatever you're past that mark anyway.

madmommy6 · 13/10/2007 17:37

Novacane thank you for asking about ds.I have started the ab's and he is a little bit better. He is still very grumpy, but then again he is male.lol.I can tell when the calpol is wearing off,he start to go down hill again.Hopefully by monday i'll be alot better.

probably rather late but i just wanted to add that LOs get jaundice when ill - that's probably what the yellow is - it's liver related so keep lots of fresh fruit/ yoghurts and veg and loads of fluids with the AB as they will be tough on the system

hope he feels better soon x
