UTI not going away with anti -biotics

Hi

I had what I suspected was the start of cystitis last Saturday.. took the sachet canesten drink and then on Sunday everything was fine.

Monday I felt it coming back.. need to pee more often and not stinging as such but that weird kinda throbbing/stingy sensation when the wee is ending.. urine cloudy and sorry for TMI but smells very strong and not a normal urine smell. Also general feeling of kinda tingly down there like I need to wee .

Rang docs Monday and was given trimethoprim 3 days worth 200mg twice a day, and asked to drop a urine sample off. Only got round to it on Friday as the doctors are only open for two hours a day and I was working.

They are not working at all.. I’m not in pain just not a nice sensation and the smell etc.. has anyone experienced this? I’ve taken the required dose and still the same.. been drinking water etc

It might be @Francis90 that it's not the right antibiotic for the bacteria in the urine. Did your dipstick come back positive? The only way the bacteria can be identified is by sending it off to the lab to be cultured.

Do another urine sample. Phone gp.

Ensure that you don’t get other symptoms like fever, feeling v sick, in which case you may need more urgent medical attention.

There’s a lot of evidence that a 3 day course isn’t enough and is actually leading to chronic infections which become resistant to antibiotics. You likely need a 5 or even 7 day course.

LaughingDonkey · 27/09/2020 07:47

@Francis90

3 days is not enough (normally for UTI is 5 days), I had 7 days worth of strong antibiotics (kidney infection following untreated UTI).

I would urge you to get your urine sample to GP first thing in the morning. I had the same symptoms as you and was treated for thrush (wrong GP diagnosis) and the result was - kidney infection.

Like @Namenic said you need to watch out for fever, feeling sick, extremely tired, suddenly feeling cold and then hot, sharp stabbing or dull continuous pain (around your hip bones), and lower back pain.

Do not put off the trip to GP, no money in the world will buy your health. Make sure you get your treatment before it develops into kidney infection.

Hi all

Thanks for the responses.. my urine hasn’t been tested yet as the appointment was over the phone.. I was just about to start trimethoprim for my acne ( it’s prescribed off label for that) so the nurse said just take it for this too and it will go but drop a urine sample in.

I dropped it on Friday so I’ll give them a ring tomorrow.

Symptoms seem to be not as bad when I wake up but get worse throughout the day

It’s quite common for a UTI to be resistant to trimethoprim. Definitely chase tomorrow.

Youngatheart00 · 27/09/2020 10:32

Definitely return. I had a really awful UTI Xmas before last and like you, tried the sachets and then the first course of antibios the GP prescribed. I actually ended up in out of hours on Boxing Day as I was in total agony and felt very unwell indeed. I was prescribed 7 days of co-amoxiclav and that sorted it once and for all. Please don’t delay!
