Your poor friend. My daughter only had them once and it scared the life out of me. Only advice is to comfort them and keep them cool to try to prevent them happening - easier said than done. Think most children do grow out of them at about 2 to 3

Yes, I did, Pippin, up until I was about nine or ten, I think. Remember going up to Great Ormond Street Hospital and repeatedly having these sticky things stuck on my head, monitoring whatever knows. My mum put it down to a vaccination (and those were the days when nobody put anything down to a vaccination). Grew out of them though, and daresay your friend's child may grow out of them sooner than that. Strangely, I had a call from some government department last year asking if I wanted to take it further.

Does your friend have any medical advice as to why she might be getting these convulsions? X carla

She has had repeated bouts of tonsillitus which causes her temp to shoot up leading on to a convulsion.I feel so sorry for her as last weekend it led to a full blown fit which was v distressing i would imagine.

My two sisters and I both had these as young children. In fact I remember my youngest sister having one in the car when she was about 2. My mum said that when I had my first one (I was the oldest) I was laying stiff as a board in my cot and she thought I was dead. Luckily her parents wre there and knew what was happening as she (my mum) had had them too.

It must be terrifying. I was all ready for my two to have them with the family history, but thankfully we have been spared that. I don't know how you do cope other than being extra-vigilant about temperatures (maybe medicating for a low grade fever whereas other parents would let it be) and waiting for them to grow out of it. Carla, that must be unusual for you to have them until that age, right?
