Tooth come out, severe pain

This is not a friend of mine, we don't actually get on, but she's had a tooth go wonky and is in severe pain. Assume it might be an absess.
So we've got her some painkillers and warned not to take too many, would it be a good idea to get her an ice press against it?

She needs to call nhs direct and get referral to a dentist / dental hospital - most are seeing urgent cases. Abscess can be very dangerous and would need antibiotics

She's tried and cannot get an appointment til Friday :(

What painkiller is she taking.

QueenOfPain · 24/09/2020 05:42

What’s the bit about not getting on with her and not being her friend got to do with anything?! Grin

QueenOfPain · 24/09/2020 05:43

Also, what’s actually happened to the tooth? Has it come out? Is it wonky? Or does she have an abscess?

Frownette · 24/09/2020 12:26

@QueenOfPain I didn't want to pretend it was a friend but bumped into her and she was in so much pain!

I thought it was most likely to be an abscess but didn't ask specifics, just asked if she could get emergency dental treatment.

She's taking paracetamol.

I think if you’re wanting to stay at arms length to the situation then suggest calling 111 and visiting a pharmacy to discuss pain relief, there are certainly more OTC options than just taking paracetamol.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 24/09/2020 13:07

If you arent friends and bumped into her why are you asking?

She needs to see a dentist.

It could just be toothache not an abscess. What do you mean gone wonky?

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 24/09/2020 13:13

If it’s not an abscess it could be dry socket, where the tooth has gone but a clot doesn’t form and the bone stays exposed. It’s horribly painful. However whatever is causing the pain your not-friend needs to see a dentist, and in the interim should go and talk to a pharmacist and see what pain killers they suggest.

Frownette · 24/09/2020 13:40

@DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon I felt really sorry for her as she was in so much pain.

I did think a pharmacist could advise on a better option than paracetamol but didn't know if I should suggest an ice pack. Ah well she'll be seen to soon.

For toothache paracetemol is your best painkiller

Always start with paracetemol and then you can add other painkillers alongside.

So alternate paracetemol and ibuprofen. If thats not enough alternate co-codamol and ibuprofen.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 24/09/2020 14:20

Theres no harm trying an ice pack but it might not help. Some people find oragel can help but again it might not help

@DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon thank you
