Is this bronchitis, pneumonia, or just a bad cold?

Have felt crap for about 9 days now.

Originally very swollen glands/ sore throat, but it never developed into runny nose etc (i.e. typical cold for me)

For past 3-4 days I've been coughing all day and night.
It's a loose, chesty cough, but I can never quite 'cough it up' - feels as if there is constantly phlegm (some good spelling on this post - huh?!) sitting in my chest/ lungs? I'm completely worn out and my chest hurts.

Thing is, about 5 years ago I had double pnemonia whilst PG which went undiagnosed for 2 weeks, and since then my chest has always been a week spot.

So the question is - is it worth going to the GP in the hope that anti-biotics might finally get rid of it, or will I just get the usual lecture about ABs and get fobbed off?

only you know Legacy

I also have weak chest from 2 years ago

I'd go to docs and tell him tbh

"weak spot" - pah!

Is the cough very painful? Last time I had bronchitis I had to lie down and hold onto my ribs every time I had a coughing fit, would be in agony otherwise :-p

Hopefully it's just a cough - give it a couple more days and then go to the doctor.

I wouldn't ask for antibiotics though - they'll prescribe them if they're. I had an inhaler last time which was much more helpful.

(Sorry, never had pneumonia, so don't know what it's like).

Sorry, I mean that I personally wouldn't ask for anti-biotics specifically..

I would get to the gp and let him/her decide. If its viral, you've lost nothing - if its pneumonia, you want it treated asap before it gets nastier. Get well soon!

Sounds like pneumonia. I've had it also. Nasty and needs fast treatment. Get well wishes! xxx

OK - I know we all complain about the NHS but how good is this:

  • called for appt at 4.25 pm & was offered a cancellation for 4.40pm
  • got there at 4.39 pm and walked straight in to see GP

She says thinks it's bronchial infection and has given me some antibiotics.

And here I am, complete with said ABs already!

Pneumonia - very high temp, chest pain, short of breath.

Legacy · 09/10/2007 20:37

Thanks scatty - thankfully not pneumonia (yet!)

Am off for a hot bath and bed!

Legacy · 09/10/2007 20:50

Oh yes! I'm run down all right at the moment... did you see my other thread ?

(Thankfully sorted now on that one I think...)

Can I add french onion soup into the equation.

The allicin in the onions is great for thinning and shifting chest secretions and the warm liquid is also soothing. If you have plenty of garlic in there it will help prevent catching other stuff as it is a natural antiseptic (and other folk keep away due to the aroma )

licquorice is excellent for bronchial things as well... apparently.
