Dry socket advice

Had a tooth out last week , really bad pain 3 days after, awful smell from mouth etc. So fed up as I was so careful with food, liquid, I don’t smoke and I’m not on any contraceptive etc .
Went to dentist and have bad infection and dry socket.. She packed it with clove oil pack and I got antibiotics.
I was in so much pain this morning that I didn’t fully concentrate on what she said. I know she said the pack disintegrates on its own and to call if it comes dislodged.
For people who’ve had this , how long does it stay in for?
I’m absolutely starving and have already lost weight over the last few days ( I am pretty thin anyway) , how can I eat? I’m absolutely terrified of dislodging it..
Also working part-time and minding my kids a lot on my own as dh working full time at the mo, was in bits doing pick ups etc. Any idea how long this could go on (I can’t think of it going on for weeks tbh) and how long this pack should be in for. Like if it falls out in a few days do I have to get it replaced?

I remember dry socket! And the relief when the dentist packed in the Clove oil stuff-mine disappeared gradually over a few days- and I didn’t have any more problems after that as I think by the the hole in the gum had been covered and no more pain.it just felt weird for a while. I was careful not to drink v hogt drinks got a couple of days and just ate on the other side of my mouth.good luck

Dentist here. Dont worry too much of pack falls out. Even a short while, will do its job. Keep taking antibiotics and a salt mouthwash and you'll start to notice a difference soon

peakygal · 16/09/2020 23:05

I had this last year and the pain was horrific! I was tanked up on painkillers but the pack really made a huge difference

Edinburghfalls · 16/09/2020 23:12

Great that a dentist commented.
Poor you. Witj work and kids and hardly any food. I felt very sorry for myself after just having my tooth pulled
Wish you better soon.

Also there's a mouthwash called difflam that you can buy in chemist. It's really good local anaesthetic that takes the edge off the pain

Thank you all very much! And great to get advice from a dentist. It was still quite sore this morning first thing so I’m still taking regular pain relief. I’m just very paranoid about the pack dislodging and the pain returning (I’ve given birth 3 times and without much pain relief and this was honestly worse) .
Also the dentist said the pack should dissolve itself but should I expect it to be lodged in there for days? Do I need to get it replaced after? Sorry for more questions, it was a blur yesterday....

Mollymalone123 · 17/09/2020 11:07

No you don’t need to get it replaced xx by the time it’s all dissolved it will have done its job- xx just keep taking the tablets and u will be fine xx

Emmnooo · 17/09/2020 11:21

Thanks you. I was getting the fear about it coming out and having to deal with the pain again. Already feeling better. Omg though ..

I know 😂 I remember it well !!

Still in a lot of pain once pain killers wear off. Sometimes I think it’s better but then starts to really increase pain-wise. I’m hoping this is just the healing process of tissue growing back over the socket..
The dentist who packed it said to call back if it’s still painful so I’m going to do that today. Does anyone know if it’s a good idea to get it repacked again or is this prolonging the healing. Also worried about how much pain relief I’m taking , in staying within the correct dosage but it’s been 7 days since the extraction. Totally fed up and with young kids to look after it’s v difficult.

It should be better xx maybe u have infection there? Ring dentist as it’s not right x

Mollymalone123 · 18/09/2020 11:07

Maybe u need different antibiotics?

Emmnooo · 18/09/2020 11:39

Thanks @Mollymalone123, going to see someone today so here’s hoping.

Oh good xx something not right as I honestly was tons better once i had the packing in and didn’t have furthers problems- totally sympathise- toothache is the worst 😂😂 ( and I say that having had 3 births-slipped disc- cancer treatment etc - and bloody toothache was the one that made me cry 😂😂) 💐

Emmnooo · 18/09/2020 14:29

Oh @Mollymalone123 you have been through a lot. I hope you are doing ok now.
Yes , worst pain I’ve ever experienced so far. I’ve had it repacked and she said she’s seen a slight improvement. I’m already on antibiotics for an infection that’s there too. Good way to lose weight , I’m literally too scared to eat now...

Mollymalone123 · 19/09/2020 05:53

@Emmnooo oh poor u! Feel sorry for u it’s taking so long - really hope you feel tons better soon! Xx

Emmnooo · 21/09/2020 12:31

Thank you! To definitely feels better, I got it repacked Friday but it came apart yesterday, she said that wouldn’t matter too much.
Thing is over all it feels improved , no smell or horrible taste or continuous pain but I am getting a really intense intermittent pain, I don’t know if this is nerve pain or the tissue healing itself?
I still need to take pain relief. Anything I have read about dry socket says that it heals on its own but I wonder how long this takes..

OP you poor thing - I had dry socket after a lower wisdom tooth extraction and found out that women are more at risk of dry socket, particularly if we have the extraction when we are not on our period. Apparently if you are on your period then it is more likely to heal Hmm. I also had a clove pack but the thing that helped was buying these dental syringes off amazon and some corsodyl, and every day I'd squirt corsodyl into the affected area, and it nailed the infection completely. (Once the clove pack had fallen out). I can remember the pain of dry socket so well - I was taking pain killers every 4 hours through the day and night for about 3 weeks. It was the worst pain I've had in a long time. I hope you start to feel better soon!!

flopflit · 23/09/2020 18:54

@Mythreeknights as a dentist I really wouldn't recommend self administration of a syringe of corsodyl into the area. You could easily break up a new, fragile clot and could cause a further open wound. Best let the dentist decide if the docket needs flushed.
I don't think the research is that convincing re more likely to get dry sockets during your period. At least we have never advised patients to avoid extractions at certain times of the month.
The advice we do give is to not rinse your mouth straight away ( wait until next day), in order to establish a clot. Any sooner you could risk washing the clot away. We also advice not to drink alcohol or smoke, as smoking, especially, is a factor. And when you do rinse, don't do it too Vigorously. Glad you are feeling better OP
