Blood sugar levels

We randomly check my daughters blood sugar levels (she has adrenal insufficiency).

Tonight she got home from school. Had pasta for dinner. An hour later she said she felt feverish Was quite grumpy. Said she felt tired and weak. Temp was normal. Took her blood sugar levels and they were 1.3!!!!!

Can this be wrong???? It’s freaked me a bit!! I gave her a cheese sandwich and some
Apple juice. Unfortunately and Sod’s law but I haven’t got any more testing strips left!!!!!!!

How do I know if it’s back to normal? Could this be a wrong reading?? I know you can get a false high..but can you get a false low??

I hope you got this sorted. But, don't hang about waiting to see if sugar levels settle . Sugars behave in wierd ways. It can be extremely dangerous. If you've run out of strips phone doctors, 111 or hospital. They should sort you out. My husband is type 1 diabetic and his high an slow level signs are often wrong. We only know with testing

Thanks for replying. Do the machines ever get a wrong ‘low’ though? Could this have been an error?!

Ive never come across a false low in anyone except those with severe circulation issues (ie testing old blood) and as a Paramedic,...there aren't many cases of that And blood sugar testing isnt high up our priority list in those cases

She sounds as though she was symptomatic of low blood sugar last night-shivery, grumpy, tired, weak.

Best thing to do in those situations is as you did - quick sugar release (juice) and some carbs to build the stores back up - sandwich.
We often encourage people to have a sandwich/toast, a banana, some long release things.

Without another testing strip, I would be making sure she felt back to her normal self, and that she had had plenty of extra carbs to rebuild her levels up to normal for then, and to ensure they stayed up.

And just make sure going forwards you have one spare pot at all times for the testing strips! As soon as you open the next one, get a new pot for spares!

Obviously if there were any concerns in that she wasnt feeling better or not back to her normal self and you had no strips, you can always phone 111 out of hours, and in an emergency 999.

If this is highly unusual for her, in that she never has low blood sugar like that, and there was no clear cause for it then you need to get an on the day appointment with the GP surgery, preferably with the designated diabetic lead/nurse as it may be she needs further testing/investigations or medications

Oh, and a good quick fix is the dextrose tablets - obviously only to have when she has low sugars, and again - an absolute must to follow them with carbs for longer/slower release and to rebuild stores

Wow thank you so much for your reply. That helps loads. Really appreciate it.

I’m going to call the GP surgery as soon as they open and get some more strips urgently.

She’s got adrenal insufficiency and has the odd low but it’s not a regular occurrence by any means.

Have never come across a false low - false highs due to sticky fingers but not false lows.

Plus she had symptoms of a low - being grumpy, weak and feeling unwell.

The pasta meal may have had something to do with it as she wasn't able to adapt after a carby meal so she ended up with a particularly low sugar.

You're welcome @Flossie44 !

Hope all is good with her and you get some help from the doctors
