DH diagnosed with heart failure

DH (42 and fairly fit) was taken to hospital last Thursday with breathing difficulties when lying down and was ventilated and put into an induced coma in the early hours of Friday morning. His short term recovery has been amazing and he's now on the cardiology ward undergoing diagnostic tests but his cardiologist believes he is in heart failure caused by inherited dilated cardiomyopathy (DH's mum had cardiomyopathy and died after a failed heart transplant - she was told when she was diagnosed that it wasn't genetic but it seems this was wrong). He has also had some arrhythmias. He's on entresto, bisoprolol, dapagliflozin and a diuretic and they have talked about fitting an ICD for the VT rhythms. He's awaiting an MRI. He seems well - gets breathless after showering etc but is able to move around freely and doesn't feel too fatigued. His resting heart rate is hovering around 90-95 and his blood pressure is 95/60.

Just posting here to learn of anyone else's experience with heart failure as right now I feel pretty lost and have no idea what the future holds. Thank you to everyone who kindly posted on my handholding thread, especially those of you who shared your experiences.

So sorry to hear this - no experience to help you but hope someone can help you soon

Have you got in touch with the British Heart Foundation? They have a lot of info and support. Presumably he is also in a specialist heart centre as well.

It must be v shocking as he has really gone from totally fit to really ill with nothing in between to give you time to get your head round things.

Thanks @AnnaMagnani. I keep meaning to call their helpline but I always have DD around when it's open. Will try tomorrow as she'll be at nursery.

It has been so, so shocking. Like a bomb going off in our orderly, pleasant life. Just praying we get him home.

My DH had heart failure in his mid 30s out of nowhere due to high BP that nobody ever picked up. He made a fast recovery and although he is on BP meds for life, 15 years on he lives a normal life.

How is your DH doing now?

My dh has it to a much lesser degree. I’ve found mn and bhf incredibly helpful.

He is quite young in the grand scheme of things. 42 is no age these days.

I think lifestyle is key to recovery, especially diet & avoiding stimulants like nicotine, caffeine, MSG in food like super noodles, pot noodles et al. I’ve also got him on vitamin b complex, magnesium citrate, vit d & K.

There’s a heart failure community nurse for when he’s home to support him.

Buy a medication organiser off amazon with three sections for am, lunchtime and pm. His meds might be am/pm now but might change and your covered if it’s 3 sections. You’ll need a pre-pay prescription when he comes home too.
