Morning

Ds (4.7) had his first loose stool on Friday morning, thought it was just something he ate as was still full of beans but during the weekend he did more of these and it got runnier (sorry tmi) so it was clear he had Diarrhea. Saturday he hardly ate but yesterday he ate more so I thought he was getting better. I'm a Childminder so let parents know I'd be closed today but as I thought he was getting better, I thought I'd open on Tuesday but would let them know.

Well....woke up 2am covered in sick Also had a couple of runny pull ups (he can't get to toilet in time so it's to save the mess if he doesn't make it) this morning and half hour ago on the toilet it was coming out like he'd switched a tap on inside

So, looks like I'll be closed tomorrow too - no way do I want my little baby mindees getting this!!

How long do these bugs normally last for? First time ds had it. Also, what can I do to make him better? He doesn't do medicine (long story) plus I believe it's best to come out to get the bug out. Should I stop him drinking milk whilst he's like this? Just let him have water?

ANY advice to help would be great. He has a red raw bottom which I keep covering with sudacream.

TIA

Don't give him anything dairy - I would just let him have dry crackers, toast etc and plenty of water.I don't usually give any medicine for d&v but just make sure you keep fluid intake up . It can take a few days to clear up.

Thanks for that, spoke to my mum earlier and she said the same Stupid dh, I told him I didn't think milk was good but he said it's to line his tummy which I must admit I remember from being a kid. Anyway, ds wasn't like this when he was having milk - now it's just water for him and toast if he wants it.

Thanks for your advice

No problem

NannyL · 08/10/2007 13:01

Im only just getting over D&V

every person in the house where i work (ie whole family and my nanny friends and their charges who were present when it all began) have all got it.

I felt ill on thrusday.... really ill thursday night / fri day and felt ill but wasnt on satirday.

am finally today starting to try and eat some proper food but still dont relaly feel like it.

Persoanlly would starve him... offering only water (small sips at a time rather than big gulps) and if really hungry (a sign that he might be getting better) then something very plain like a rice cake / dry toast / rich tea biscut etc.

I waited 15 hours before eating anything... had a slice of dry white bread which set it all off again

Hope you get better soon. The bug we all had was sooo nasty

mummydoc · 08/10/2007 13:17

we are all getting it one after the other, I am at work today , struggling to keep down some lucazade - you have been given all the right advice, no dairy, sips of fluids ( the one and only time I tell parents to allow cola ) watery or something with a little sugar is fine ( ribena, cola etc) and offer food only when he is really asking for something ot eat.

bloodsuckingLOONEY · 08/10/2007 13:39

Oh NannyL, hope you feel better soon. Ds is just eating toast atm as he was very upset and wanted food. The thing is, throughout this whole weekend he's been his usual self but with the runs and then sick, apart from low appetite on Saturday and complaining of pains from time to time, the rest of the time he's been fine. I've tried explaining that food will set it off but he's having none of it - gave him the dry toast and he nearly burst into tears as no marmite was on it So I put the tiniest bit on so he'd stop moaning and we'll see if he ends up going again. The thing is, I can't really starve him totally as this started on Friday!

Luckily I didn't have any of my baby mindees after Tuesday as Wednesday baby was ill and the other baby who would have been here Thurs & Fri is on hols. The only one who was exposed to him here after Wed was nearly 4 yr old pre-schooler for just a couple of hours each day. I'd feel really bad if any of them got it too.

Thanks for the advice

Oh mummydoc.......just saw your post....unfortunately ds will ONLY drink water which is usually really good but not when you want them to have a little sugared water or something to help.

Thanks for everyone's advice. By the way he is behaving, you wouldn't know anything was wrong with him!!!

Whenver my dc have had this type of bug it is impossible to stop them eating. They also seem to crave all the things that they really shouldn't have - milk, yoghurt, ice cream!

I usually try to get them to have toast etc and with ds he was quite pleased to be allowed some flat coke.

I remember my gp saying once that a lot of parents prolong a d&v bug by giving in to their food demands but he thought this was better than a miserable toddler who was both ill and not allowed to eat what they wanted.

hennipenni · 08/10/2007 13:47

Hi Looney, whenever mine have this (or indeed myself, usually over christmas!)when they are complaining about toast and yet more toast I give an apple instead, it contains fluids which help and also in the off chance that it comes back up, it doesn't taste too bad (know this from personal experience )

bloodsuckingLOONEY · 10/10/2007 08:30

Thanks for the advice. I only let him have toast and water in the end and his last D or V was before lunchtime on Monday so yesterday I let him eat normally as he'd hardly eaten since Friday. This morning, he shouted out for us at 5.50 - leaking nappy Been to the toilet since and my god, he's had sooooo much gas!!!!

So I spent an hour this morning trying to sort childcare for the kids who thought they could come back today. 3 childminders for 2 children, bit messy having to change cms part way through the day but mum was happy I'd managed to do all that before 7.30.

Made an appointment at the Dr's for 9.45 as this started on Friday and it's going on longer than I expected - plus I need advice about what to do the rest of the week (different mindee during day tomorrow).

Ok, Dr said he DOESN'T advice starving them for x amount of time as children and that I should feed ds what he wants and give him diary if he wants, that's fine. He did say that he'll find it harder to digest the sugar in the milk and that is why he's so gassy but not to worry. As it's day 6, Dr wants a sample if he's still like this on Friday. I'm staying closed the rest of this week as can't risk babies catching it.

Thanks for all the advice
