Infected molar - root canal or removal?

I have 2 crowns next to each other at the back - one of them has got infected and there is decay behind the crown. I am on a course of antibiotics. So the dentist has recommended removing the crown, doing root canal and adding a new crown. All in it is going to cost about €1400. Or I can have the tooth extracted (€90), and get an implant put in when I can afford it (€2000). I was going to get the root canal, but a couple of people have said that it isn't always successful and that they have had problems with them within the year. It would be a big chunk of money for us, and not easily affordable.

Has anyone experience with this kind of procedure and what would you recommend. I am 47 and I grind my teeth so am worried it won't last.

Can your work refer you to occupational health or a private doctor? So sorry, it sounds miserable Thanks

Wrong thread, sorry!

My dh has had two root canal fillings years ago with no issues. His dentist says she has to take enough time to do it thoroughly and she says some dentists don't wash out with special cleaner enough as they go along, as the little capsules of special mouth cleaners are expensive and they don't use enough.

I've just had the most painful tooth extraction due to a failed root canal (however that was done maybe 5 to 6 yrs ago I can't remember as my mouth is full of fillings and root canals and gaps!). Turned out the infected root canal the actual tooth was fused to my sodding jaw bone so I was there for 2 hours he was going to send me to hospital but managed to get a drill and take the tooth out! Took me a while to recover. But now I have to get a bridge which they're saying is £1800 and an implant would be nearly double that. A lot of money! My dentist would do a 0% interest for 1 year to pay it off. Sorry I haven't been helpful but I would get an implant personally. When you research it it does say implants last longer but also its how you look after your teeth after. Also you could get a mouth guard for night for the grinding. Hth. And good luck. I hate dealing with my teeth you pay for the pain that's what gets to me!!!

I'm almost your age and have rubbish teeth: due to legacy issues with badly done fillings my teeth are extremely weak. If I crack a tooth or lose a filling I'm looking at a crown. I have four so far and getting a fifth shortly. All my molars practically will need to be done. I had two root canals two years ago and have had no problems since.
I just got a guard as I grind my teeth too.

I had a root canal over a decade ago and finally had the same recurrently infected tooth out just before lockdown and can honestly say I don't miss the bastard thing. I did think about an implant but having a gap really isn't that bad. The extraction wasn't a barrel of laughs but was definitely worth doing. Equally I've had a root canal in another tooth too and that's been fine, will look to get a crown on that once everything's back to normal.

I was in the middle of root canal before lock down (I had one appointment left scheduled for the week everything shut down) and have only just had a follow on appointment with my dentist. Unfortunately she couldn't finish it because it was sore after being left so long. She's now cleaned and medicated it and I've got an appointment in a few weeks to finish it off. I'm currently in a considerable amount of pain and I'm worried that there could be another lockdown which would mean even further delays. If your tooth's causing you pain or discomfort I'd be tempted to have it out op in case there are delays with root canal.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I am in do much pain that I am leaning towards just getting the bastarding thing out. I use CPAP due to my sleep apnea (what a prize amongst women BlushGrin) so can't use a gum sheild as well.
