Milder cases of chicken pox?

Ds has been looking like he's getting the pox for a couple of weeks - the odd spot arrives and then comes to nothing but the spots were not blistery.

The pox is going around at nursery.

Anyway yesterday he had a fever and then a grand total of just two blistery spots (and quite small ones compared to what I expected) appeared and no more since.

Could he just have it mildly or perhaps the full force of it hasn't arrived?

Anyone else's dc had similar?

Interestingly he also had hand foot and mouth only very mildly - with just 2 blisters - last year and it is a similar virus so maybe he just beats this kind of thing off?

Am wondering especially what happens with how long he has to stay off nursery if no more spots appear - just til these 2 blister presumably?

p.s. the spots aren't even itchy and the centres are whiteish not yellowy - is that possibly still chicken pox??

DD1 had chickenpox when it went round at nursery. She got it really mildly, too... I think 3 or 4 spots in total, wasn't ill at all.

I think you're right about spots crusting over

Hi, my dd has woken up today with similar mild rash - mainly round mouth and on arms and legs. It seems to be spreading from her extremities inwards (so moving down her arms and legs now towards her stomach) but she's not getting loads of spots.

Trouble is, she's has chicken pox before! I wonder if you can get it more than once? The spots are not itchy, centre is not yellow but they look like they are blistering. We've just come back from the walk in centre (nurse), and they just don't know what it is! Its not hand foot and mouth, not chicken pox, meningitis, she's had her MMR so not measles etc. We're stumped - and I don't know whether to keep her off nursery etc.

Why do these things always happen on a Sunday when the GPs is shut??

princessmelBABY · 07/10/2007 13:06

My 2 have both had it mildly. Ds had only 1 spot at 2yrs and dd 2 spots.

BUT they both got it again. This summer. they were covered.

scienceteacher · 07/10/2007 13:06

DS2 had very mild chicken pox - just a couple of spots in the right place. I wasn't sure about it at the time, but it was confirmed when DD came out with it more convincingly exactly 2 weeks later.

francagoestohollywood · 07/10/2007 13:22

ds had very mild chicken pox. No temperature, no itchyness, just a few spots. Then I had it, and it was a completely different story

boo64 · 07/10/2007 14:06

It is meant to be awful for adults - poor you Franca- luckily ds and I have both had it.

Gatley - if she just has spots and no other symptoms and they've ruled everything obvious out, maybe it's just one of those viral things? Hope she's ok.

We've now got all of 3 spots - a third appeared today. Am hoping it stays mild but also dreading the week without nursery having to mope around the house!

My son had it very mildly, 1 spot. Had it properly a month later and then his baby sister really badly 2 weeks later.

Niecie · 07/10/2007 14:21

Apparently you can get chickenpox again if you have 10 or less spots (although how they can be so specific is beyond me).

I wasn't sure DS2 even had chickenpox as he had so few spots so took him to the doctors and it turned out that he did. Thankfully he had the grand total of 32 spots so hopefully he is safe from having it again.

boo64 · 07/10/2007 14:36

So I need to cheer when he gets to 10 spots - how odd that they could determine that!
Maybe the point is that if it is too mild they don't acquire immunity...
Oh blimey Nab that's not what I want to hear as I could have weeks of this on and off ahead of me!

It's 10 years since my kids had their very mild CP, so they are probably reasonably immune.

Niecie · 07/10/2007 16:33

It seems some people are born with some immunity too. I know somebody whose daughter has been exposed to chickenpox many times, including from her brother and father and she has never had it.

If your DS is similar Boo64, maybe you will get away with it. Fingers crossed for you both.

ScaryScienceT · 07/10/2007 16:37

Short of getting the vaccine, there's not a lot you can do about how your DS has responded. I think I would be inclined to mix with as many CP children as poss - but CP parties seemed to be frowned on nowadays.

boo64 · 07/10/2007 19:05

A couple more spots now - maybe 6 in total so we will see what tomorrow brings and just hope it stays mild but not so mild he doesn't get immunity!
The MIL is pretty sure they are pox - she's not a medic but of course has seen CP with her kids.

He doesn't seem itchy at all which is weird!

We've got a second opinion from the Gp (locum didn't have a clue what it was). She has got hand foot and mouth so we are all in quarantine! It looks nothing like its supposed to in the textbooks, she has spots all over the place except on her torso but heigh ho we are all different!

saythatagain · 09/10/2007 14:26

Must make a note to self to expect dd (now aged 3 1/2) to get chicken pox again damn!

boo64 · 09/10/2007 14:30

Poor you Gatley and poor dd! We had that last Winter - ds then me - it's no fun!

No more spots here - so a total of 6 and only one or two with little blisters but even then not really typical CP. And no itchiness. All very odd!

The GP isn't sure if he has it or not but given the circumstances said to assume he has for the sake of other kids at nursery etc.
Given the timing and the epidemic at nursery I'm assuming he has it though and unless it suddenly gets worse we seem to have escaped very lightly.

Say that - I asked the GP if mild cases mean they don't get immunity and he was adamant that even if it is mild they acquire immunity.
