Supporting a friend with cancer

A friend of mine has been recently diagnosed with cancer. She lives alone (mid divorce) a few hours away from me and has also recently had a bereavement. I suspect she is hoping to die to be with her family member, her long term mental health isn't great.

Is there anything you would have appreciated as you started chemo?
Any dos and dont says?

Thanks

(Please move if there's a specific cancer section)

I received lots of flowers but really appreciated the friend that arrived with a couple of cottage pies and lasagnes for the freezer so when I was feeling really awful after chemo I didn't have to think about cooking supper for my children.

Loss of smell/appetite and nausea can be short-term effects of cancer
treatment plus tiredness as well. Ditto above : a good supply of
ready meals helps everyone ( I kept a few in the freezer so visitors
could be fed when they visited)
Some nice mineral water and basket of small goodies eg tea bags,
plain biscuits, Things that go down easily not very rich.
Macmillan will do one hour visit per week to single people

I would have liked some books and hats.
