My DD2 is 2 weeks old and still has yellow eyes and slightly yellow skin, so midwife sent us off for blood tests.
Doc rang, and spoke to dh, but i didnt get to talk to him so didnt get to ask any questions.

He said her conjugated bilirubin is ok, but her normal bilirubin is very high he said she will be fine and doesnt need treatment, but wondered if there is anything i need to know about the results and need to keep eye on.
I tried searching the net but all say high billirubin means treatment so a little confused (doesnt take much) hehe

TIA

L

ds didn't need treatment but was yellow for about 3 weeks or longer. His level was high but just below the light treatment line. Don't know the specifics but perhaps it differentiates between neonatal jaundice which clears with regular feeding /weeing/exposure to sunlight and physiological(?) jaundice caused by underlying complications.

you could always put her in the window to get some sun

My lo had jaundice and needed light therapy treatment for a couple of weeks. When he was 3 weeks his levels weren't going down so he got sent for blood and urine tests (different from the heel prick he would get most days to check levels) to make sure that there was not any abnormal underlying cause i.e blood disorder, thyroid probs. His tests all came back normal and they put it down to an extended breastfeeding jaundice. If your wee ones tests have all come back normal and he's under the treatment level then it should hopefully just disapear with time and plenty of feeding. I can remember like you, searching the web at the time for info as nobody explained it well and all I could think was the worst case scarnio. Hopefully your wee one will get better soon x

The likely scenario is that your dd jaundice will go on its own accord, or with some help with light treatment.

If it doesn't go after 6 weeks, please put pressure on your GP to have the billirubin levels monitored, and referrel if necessary to make sure there isn't an underlying problem.

My DS was jaundiced within the 1st 24 hours after birth and required phototherapy.
This was mainly because he was born 4 weeks early and endured a 2 hour second stage.
I found that his jaundice took ages to clear and the whites of the eyes were the last thing to return to normal.
I just had to make sure he fed regularly and good amounts, expose to natural light and to watch for him becoming excessively sleepy (high bilirubin levels cause lethargy)
Bilirubin is normally eliminated by the liver, as a newborns liver is immature excess bilirubin causes jaundice.
It may take a while but if your little one feeds well and is alert when awake I really wouldn't worry.

I agree, just keep an eye on it. If they were worried they would do liver function tests but I'm sure it will just go on its own. It can be worrying though, I know.
