Sacro Illiac Inflammation - treatment experiences

Hello

I'm looking for advice and experiences for those who have had S.I joint pain or inflammation.

I'm waiting for an MRI but I think I know where the issue is.

Brief history

  • Very fit pre pregnancy - did yoga daily
  • Severe pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy - started at 19 weeks. Unable to walk by end of pregnancy
  • 19 months post partum now and pain has moved and is fixed around SI joints. It's awful every day. Gets progressively worse as day does on.
  • I do one to one physio and pilates - no real improvement, exercises focuses on building strength in muscles around pelvis flutes, core etc .
  • have seen osteopaths but pre lockdown before the pain focused on back of pelvis
  • I have a huge range of movement in pelvis (hypermobile)

I'm waiting for an MRI - for those who've had a similar experience what were you diagnosed with and what was your treatment plan. I'm so desperate for some relief 😢

Thank you!

Hello! I experienced something very similar so maybe I can suggest some things. My issues started in pregnancy but were worsened by a terrible delivery (nerve damage and all sorts). I have hyper mobile pelvis and SI joints.

I've tried chiropractor, osteopath, private consultant for MRI scans, etc, and nothing identified an actual problem, yet still I was in pain daily and struggling to do fairly basic activities.

Switching from osteopath to a physiotherapist was an important first step for me: she was much more use than my osteopath and identified all kinds of other issues that needed treating. Most importantly, my physio realised that I needed insoles and so I saw a podiatrist. The first set of insoles helped quite a bit, then I went back for a review after a year, and had a small heel lift on one foot (literally a couple of mm) and that made a massive difference.

The new improved insoles plus some Pilates targeted on my problem areas have been really transformative. After years of pain, but no actual diagnosis, I'm finally pretty much pain free. I do Pilates daily without fail and that really helps me with the hyper mobility.

This is really long, sorry, but my top tips are insoles and daily Pilates! Hope you find something that works for you.

That's interesting about insoles.. To cushion or to change your gait?

Are there any particular pilates poses you're finding best?

Insoles to change my gait. One of my feet pronates (rolls in) and the insole corrects that, though I have one for each foot. The podiatrist has a kind of giant marshmallow that you stand on and they take a cast of your foot and make the insole entirely bespoke. Total game changer.

In terms of Pilates poses, I do some exercises in table which involve dipping toes (these might not be the technical term), and other abdo prep exercises, some clam etc on each side, some bridge work and some hands and knees cat/camel and stretching out opposite arm/leg. This last one used to cause my SI joints to flare up, but my Pilates teacher has worked with me for ages to build up my core strength so I can do it properly. My routine is about 25 mins per day: I do it instead of an evening commute at the moment as I'm still wfh.

Ah that's interesting! I do lots of rising onto my toes to centre my feet each day but I could see about shoes.

Yes haha toe taps. I do all of those exercises but good to know they are helping you! 💐

I hope you continue seeing improvements
