DS (10 months) having EEG, what to expect?

Hi,

DS is being admitted into hospital on Monday for some tests, and he'll be having an EEG.

Can anyone give me any idea as to what to expect for him?

He is 10 months old.

Thx

DS had an EEG, but he was 6 years, they attached wires to his head and neck, to monitor his brain waves, he had exercisesto do such as closes his eyes for a certain number of seconds, opening his mouth etc, so I suppose with a baby it will be differen, but dont worry, its not traumatic at all.

My niece had one too when she was about 10, they told her to open her mouth and close her eyes for 20 seconds, but by the time 20 seconds was up she was fast asleep

My dd1 had an EEG at about that age (12 months), she'd just started walking and I remember it was so difficult to keep her still.

She didn't have to do anything except sit there, and that was very tiring for me because she kept on fidgeting. The people carrying out the EEG seemed quite annoyed and told me off for not keeping her more still!

She had loads of wires attached to her head, and I remember they flashed some lights to see how she reacted to them.

It took about 20 minutes or so.

May I ask, why does your ds need the EEG?

My dd1 had had some unexplained fits that I now know to be reflex anoxic seizures.

Try not to worry about the EEG, and I hope it works out ok.

Oh yes, the flashing lights, it starts of slow then builds up to a rapid flashing.

He is having an EEG to find out why he is delayed with his development. He had an MRI in May that came back all clear (so it seems like the structure of his brain is normal), but the drs are concerned because he may be having absence attacks (although sometimes we can "snap" him out of an "attack" so hopefully it is just daydreaming), and we do have family history of epilepsy.

He had electrodiagnostic tests to assess his vision a couple of months ago to see if his brain responses to lights were normal (which they were) and he had the wires attached to him then.

Thanks for your responses, we really haven't been told very much at all but what is important is that the neurologists are very keen to give him as many tests as possible...

trace2 - my dd1 has had reflex anoxic seizures.

A 'fright' such as a bump on the head or simply something unexpected happening can cause her to stop breathing and her heart stops beating. She goes deathly white and her eyes turn upwards. She starts breathing again(I resuscitated her one time) but still remains unconcious and starts convulsing.

She has a reduced level of conciousness for 20 minutes or so, and is usually very tired for a few hours afterwards.

These seizures are 'harmless'. (at least harmless for her, they're not harmless for me, nearly giving me a heart attact when it happens and definitely a few more grey hairs) The last one she had was 18 months ago, so hopefully she has grown out of them.
