Pharmacist told me to go to a&e, 111 told me to leave it?

Just wanted your opinion, I’ve been in hospital given IV antibiotics for a nasty tonsillitis infection I’ve had for 2 weeks. When I left they gave me a 10 day course of clindamycin, 12 a day. The pharmacist took me aside (this was Wednesday) and said that if I got any diarrhoea to go to a&e because this antibiotic is most likely to cause a form of colitis? Since being home I googled the antibiotics and found a few warnings involving this drug specifically saying it should only be used as a last resort due to serious side effects ( I’m allergic to penicillin and other AB hasn’t worked).
Last night I had to run to the toilet and had such bad diarrhoea, I never suffer with this, last time I did was probably 7 or 8 years ago with food poisoning. I rang 111 and an out of hours gp advised me to carry on taking the medication and diarrhoea can be normal with AB, which is fine just I’ve had to take a few of AB the past few years and never had this, and I was only following what the pharmacist told me to do and speak to somebody. Now I’m not sure who to listen to? Would you guys reccomend I get a second opinion or just take as normal?

Seriously trust your pharmacist on this

Smiling89 · 28/08/2020 08:19

I'd personally follow the pharmacist's advice - drugs are their speciality and they know them better than 111.

Planterpots · 28/08/2020 08:22

Trust your pharmacist, go to A&E!

wineandcheeseplease · 28/08/2020 08:23

I'd trust the pharmacist!

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 28/08/2020 08:23

take yoghurt but follow pharmacists advice

blackmushrooms · 28/08/2020 08:24

Go to a&e 111 being overly anti you going at the moment imo. My daughter broke her arm and they told me she was fine and didn't need to go. I just knew she wasn't fine and it was late at night so I couldn't take her to the doctors and minor injuries shut whilst we kept calling 111 back to say we really think she's hurt herself.

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 28/08/2020 08:24

or ask the surgeon? the ward?

MsWonderful · 28/08/2020 08:24

I would also trust the pharmacist on this, they’re experts on medications, interactions and side effects.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 28/08/2020 08:25

Just go to AnE and when there say about the pharmacists advice. Why would yoi bother with 111.

muddledmidget · 28/08/2020 08:27

Pharmacist here, I'd definitely ignore 111 as advice should be to discontinue clindamycin if diarrhoea develops

If they were prescribed following a stay in hospital I'd contact the ward for advice, and if I couldn't reach them go to A&E or contact my own GP if they are usually reachable and helpful

Some antibiotics can cause C diff.

This is serious and very infectious.

If not treated properly you can have it long term.

Go to a and e.

Bagelsandbrie · 28/08/2020 08:52

Go to a and e. 111 seems default set to try and keep everyone at home at the moment even when they do need to go to a and e.

Palavah · 28/08/2020 08:54

Trust the pharmacist

Emmalanexxx · 28/08/2020 08:59

Thank you so much, I only contacted 111 as I worry people will think I’m being over dramatic so wanted their advice and they acted like I was being extra. I kept explaining what the pharmacist told me and that’s why I was slightly worried, and they were saying “all antibiotics can cause it” I guess they weren’t as familiar with this particular one as the pharmacist, yeah you’re all right he knows what he’s talking about!

Go to A&E OP, Pharmacist don’t got to Uni to study pharmacology for 5 years for nothing. I’d trust a pharmacist over a dr any day. Hope you feel better

SavingShoes · 28/08/2020 09:09

Yes antibiotics can cause loose stools but the experts in drugs are pharmacists so I would follow the advice of both your own pharmacist and the one who has posted on here.
111 GP may have been a nurse clinician or just stating about symptoms of general abx.

Emmalanexxx · 28/08/2020 09:26

I’ve called the pharmacist whos advised me to call the hospital so I’m on hold to get through to the ward, been 17 mins now, I’ll let you all know what they say!

Echo others on here. Go to A&E. Better to be safe and have it checked out than sorry with colitis.

Emmalanexxx · 28/08/2020 10:09

Okay so hospital have asked me to come back in, so glad I’ve double checked with them rather than follow gp advice, just on my way in now thank you all xxx

UPDATE;
Feel a bit annoyed really because I’ve wasted my time, I went to minors a&e seen a doctor who said I had 2 options literally, take the antibiotics or don’t. I’m on a 10 day course and I’ve only took 2 days worth so I don’t feel it’s wise to stop them because my symptoms haven’t fully gone, to which he said okay just see how you get on with them??? He didn’t seem to bat an eyelid at the diarrhoea or what the pharmacist and lady on the ward told me when I called ( she asked me to come in to hosp) so now I’m back home confused.

Did the ward want you to go up to them or to go to A&E?

minimagician · 28/08/2020 13:00

And sorry this is so stressful!

HoratiotheHorsefly · 28/08/2020 13:04

Wouldn't the ward have wanted you to go back to them rather than minors?

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 28/08/2020 13:08

Oh dear, I was advised yoghurt to restore healthy gut

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 28/08/2020 13:09

Perhaps speak to the ward itself op?
