ok so everytime dd gets a cold it al ends uo on her chest and she gets quite wheezy

have had antibiotics before because it lasts weeks after the cold has run it's course

luckily she doesn;t get a bad cold that often but the last time she was like this the doc gave me an inhaler, spacer and a mask thingy to use

i have succuessfully used this once and that was the last time i could get it out of the cupboard without her running a mile

now she is really wheezy and i cannot get anywhere near her again - does nayone have any tips

thanks

Rugby tackling her, sitting on her and forcing her?

Or would that be a bit OTT? (It's what I always used to do)

must admit that's tactic we have already tried but ses very wriggly

just thought there might be another way - maybe i could do it whilst she was asleep but then i wouldn't want to wake her!!

DS got his spacer & inhalers when he was 2. He needed it about 5 times (with different inhalers) times a day. We found in the beginning it was best to sit in front of him at his level. and look him in the eye and breathe deeply. The first few times DH stood behind him so he couldn't run away. When he realised it helped him, he settled down and no problem after that.

TBH now he has no problems with it (3.2 & down to 2 a day)

mybe we will just have to force her then to start with the thing is that she doesnlt need it all the time and so by the time she got used to it we wouldn;t be doing it until she needed it again and by then she will have forgotton

damn

Both DDs used inhalers - using stickers as bribery worked very well. They used to give their doll a puff of the inhaler first and count to ten and then it was their turn. If they did it, they could choose a sticker and put it on their spacer. They used to love collecting them and in the end you couldn't see the spacer as it was crammed full of stickers. Worth a try!!

will give it a go especially the dolly thing and see how she takes it!!

wish me luck

My dss only needed their inhalers irregularly too. We used to play with the spacer and mask thingy without the inhaler in it, inbetween, pretending that it was a trumpet - so that it didn't become unfamiliar.

By 2 she might also manage without the mask, blowing in and out to see if she can make the little valve click and getting lots of applause - or stickers - if she does.

We also tried strong arm tactics. And ds1 would take it in his sleep - but then he always has been a deep sleeper!

Good luck!

Good Luck

ds was like this at 2

we did the sicker thing which was mildy successful

ended up just using brute force and he eventually realised it made him feel better.

he ended up needing to use the spacer for steroids everyday so it was worth the effort

mustsleep · 08/10/2007 09:19

ok i did it!

i went over all cheerful and said we would o it on her dolly and then that ds would do it (without pressing the inhaler) and she just did it i'm not sure that she did the thingy where you make it click right but something must have worked because she stopped wheezing within 5 mins!!

did it again before bed and did the trick again

thanks for all your help
